James Balston Photography

James originally trained and worked as an Interior Designer. Having always had a keen interest in photography, he began to take it up more seriously, initially for the purpose of shooting his own design projects. Gradually he began to receive commissions from fellow Designers and Architects to a point where photography became his main career.

While most of his work is now based around architectural and interior subject matter, he also takes in landscape, travel and still life. Clients include Interior Designers, Stephen Ryan and Joanna Wood; Architects, Squire & Partners;Hotel & Leisure Groups, Monogram Hotels and London Clubs; and Institutions,English Heritage and Royal Mail.

James’ workhas appeared in numerous magazines including: Conde Nast Traveller, Grand Designs, Coast, Sunday Times, Saturday and Sunday Telegraph, House & Garden and Living etc, as well as various books such as the “Cool Hotels” series,“Restaurant Design” by Bethan Ryder, and “Outside” by Terrence Conran &Diarmuid Gavin
