Profile

Howard Chairs Limited

Howard Chairs Limited have the unrivalled reputation of being the Rolls Royce of furniture manufactures. Established in 1820, the traditional and time-honoured craftsmen skills have been maintained and passed down throughout the generations. Their craftspeople, some of whom have been with the company for over 40 years, are proud to be still using the same process to produce ‘HOWARD’ chairs and sofas. Having cultured a unique and unmistakable reputation for supplying the ultimate in furniture excellence and luxury, they make no apology for their time consuming workmanship and quality of materials. Each piece of hand made furniture begins with solid beech frames, jointed, dowelled, screwed and glued together. Then it is hand lashed with jute webbing, which is tensioned and tacked, to the frame. Staples or other modern day short cuts are used. Individual coiled springs are then sewn to the webbing and lashed down. By building up layers of animal hair under hessian, hand stitched into position, the seat, arms and back are shaped. Finally the piece is then covered in their exclusive H & S lining. The seat and back cushions are either filled with down & feather or pure down upon request. It is Howard Chairs belief that this is the only way furniture should be constructed to give both lasting comfort and durability. This philosophy is reflected in the keen prices fetched on second-hand and antique pieces. As each piece of furniture is made to order, selection can be made from either their extensive standard range, or they can work to the customers specific instructions, with regard to both size and, if so desired, their own design. If they have the model in stock, they are more than happy to allow the client to have the item on approval, so the item can be seen in situ. In addition to their furniture they also offer a soft furnishing service that includes hand made curtains, drapes, cushions and fabric walling. Needless to say, the same level of excellence is also applied.
