BIID at Interiors UK

BIID Members Dan Hopwood and John Evans were speaking on behalf of the
Institute on the opening day of Interiors UK 2012 last Sunday. We are delighted to
report that the seminar theatre was filled to the brim with industry
professionals during the talks.
Dan had great success with his talk ‘Confessions of an Interior Designer' in
September last year. A success he repeated yesterday. The aim of both talks was
to promote the importance of professionalism in the interior design industry

Before the seminar theatre opened BIID Industry Partners Kensington Home
Technology hosted a BIID breakfast in the Designer Village.

Chris Westhead

We know that members will be very sad to learn of the recent death of Chris Westhead. An exceptional project manager, Chris co-founded Gordon Lindsay Design with Gordon Lindsay and for 35 years they ran a highly successful practice with a broad range of projects here and abroad. Chris was a champion of professional practice in the interior design profession and a strong supporter of the work of the Institute. He gave his time generously whether delivering lectures to students or CPDs to Institute members, assisted in drafting the BIID client contracts and was instrumental in the development of the Institute’s complaints procedure.

He instinctively knew where help and support was needed and brought his expertise and never failing sense of humour to bear. There are many designers who have benefited from his sound advice and guidance over the years. He has left a legacy of raised standards in the profession and will be much missed by all who knew him. Chris is survived by his partner Gordon.

The funeral will take place at 2pm on Tuesday 10th January at Metfield Church Suffolk. Queries can be answered via the undertakers on 01379 640810.

(Chris is pictured above on the right, with his partner Gordon, at the 2011 BIID Summer Party celebrating the presentation of the BIID Merit Award to Gordon).

Closing date for entries is 30 November 2011. All short-listed schemes in the competition will be exhibited at NLA's galleries in The Building Centre, WC1, from January to March 2012, supported by a public programme of free talks and consultation sessions with architects and interior designers. In 2010 the Don't Move, Improve! open day welcomed over 1,000 visitors through the doors, with three free seminars, 12 architects and three interior designers running surgeries every 30 minutes from 11.00am through to 5.00pm.

BIID President, Diana Yakeley, BIID Marketing Director, Debra McQuin, and BIID Member Christopher Dezille talks about how the trends in interior design has shifted to include more bold colours, less of a ‘bling' style and moat important of all a call for sustainability.
Charrette 11

For the first time the BIID collaborated with the American Institute of Architects (AIA) on their annual student charrette. In the last part of the nineteenth century at the architecture department of the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, a charrette or small cart, would be wheeled into the design studio collecting students' work to take to the reviewing jury. The less organised students often walked alongside the cart finishing their drawings and were said to be working ‘en charrette.' This has now come to mean an intensive design process.

The charrette saw students being divided into groups for a day of intensive problem solving. The groups compete to produce the best solutions possible to a design assignment given at the beginning of the day and are guided by professional architects, interior designers and educators.
Architect Stephen Yakeley a founding member of the board of the AIA's UK chapter realised that their annual charrette held the potential of being an event for both architect students and interior design students alike. BIID President, Diana Yakeley and associate director Hayley Manning, welcomed the idea. When approached Brianne Page and Shannon Piatek, who were running this year's charrette, responded with enthusiasm. The charrette has always been well attended and this year there was an addition of interior design students from amongst others London Metropolitan University and University College Falmouth.

This years' challenge was to design an extension to the British Museum, which lies just around the corner from the Architectural Association in Bedford Square where the charrette was held. The students were split into 9 teams and one mentor was appointed to each group before they received their brief. The teams visited the British Museum before going back to the Architectural Association to start their work. The groups had until 4.30pm to finish the assignment and creative sparks were flying.

Paul Finch CBE, head of Design Council CABE, chaired the jury and was joined on the judging panel by Graeme Brooker, head of Interior Educators, and Stephan Reinke, the first president of the AIA UK. There is no doubt that the quality of work was very high, but there had to be winners and first place went to Canterbury University, second place went to Cambridge University and third place went to the interior design students of Chelsea college of Art and Design (pictured above).

At the end of the day there seemed to be a consensus that it had been an absolutely exhilarating, if exhausting, experience. This was a success which will hopefully be repeated next year!

Go to our Facebook page to see more pictures from the charrette!

British Lifestyle Showcase and Market Visit: South Korea

UK Trade and Investment (UKTI) is inviting UK interior designers to a 'British Lifestyle and Showcase Market Visit' in South Korea. The recent introduction of the EU-South Korea Free Trade Agreement is predicted to cause tariff reductions on 97% of all goods within the next three years. This is opening up business opportunities and the UKTI is therefore offering UK companies the opportunity to present their products and services to key South Korean buyers and press. The showcase, which will take place in March 2012, will be held at the British Ambassador's residence in Seoul.

Visitors are required to pay for their own travel and accommodation. There is an administration and events fee of £250 for each company as well as a fee for their individual Overseas Market Introduction Service visit programme including arrangement of B2B meetings, starting at £666.

If you think this is of interest to you or your company, or

And So To Bed

The BIID was invited to present the ‘Award for Best Stand Design' at Decorex international 2011. As always, Decorex offered many creative and inspiring stands, making the competition tough. The judging panel, a group of professional interior designers from the BIID membership, trawled the exhibition looking for the most deserving stand to win the prize. The judges finally decided upon the stand by ‘And So to Bed'. The specialist in beds and bedroom furniture had managed to create a time capsule with their stand, reflecting our nation's love for sport and lazy summer days (all with a retro touch). They even had an ice-cream cart!

Now boarding: From Toronto to Tokyo and Beyond

The BIID is proud to both be owned and governed by its members. Our many
committees, consisting of volunteering members, are always working hard
to create the best BIID possible. Simon Hamilton, Director of the
International Committee, is guest blogging for us to give an insight
into the current activities of the committee:

"For some time there has been mystery surrounding what the International Committee actually do. We'd like to let you know we are constantly developing relationships and creating new connections for BIID interior designers abroad. Just like so many BIID members we are all hardworking designers with our own practices. We volunteer our time to spread the knowledge and experience we have beyond UK shores.

"The International Committee for 2011 members are Adrienne Chinn, Eduardo Cardenes, Lynne Hunt, Matteo Bianchi, Noriko Sawayama, Orna O'Reilly and Simon Hamilton. With such diversity, several cultures and languages are represented including Irish, English, Japanese, Spanish, Canadian and Italian. We are always open to more members being involved, as we simply cannot cover the globe with seven people.

"Whether it's visiting the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan, Maison et Objet in Paris, The Interior Design Show in Toronto, Neocon in Chicago, or 100% Design in Tokyo, we are very keen to make sure we spend the time to benefit the BIID members. We continually have the chance to meet with the local design community and network creating strong foundations for business.

"Please take this as a chance to have your say about what we should do for you. BIID members have recently been on a panel discussion speaking to a distinguished audience about British Design in Russia. We have also been invited by several suppliers on factory tours in Italy, exclusive guided walks of historical buildings and local markets in Morocco and exhibiting at the most prestigious interiors show in Canada's thriving design centre, Toronto.

"We have had success in the past with missions to Tokyo in 2009 and Chicago in 2010. We aim to help give the Institute a global position. As there are so many unexplored markets we felt it was time to find out what the membership really wants. Where in the world do you already work or would like to have new clients? We have an enormous number of contacts which are increasing monthly.

"We offer our newest International members the warmest of welcomes and we can proudly say that the International Membership includes the following countries: Australia, Japan, Belgium, Lebanon, Bermuda, Qatar, Canada, Russia, France, Saudi Arabia, Germany, South Africa, Hong Kong, Switzerland, India, Turkey, Iran, United Arab Emirates, Ireland and the United States.

"As the UKTI continue to provide invaluable financial and advisory support to BIID members, we are well equipped to literally take on the world! The countries where we have been speaking to are Italy, Morocco, India, Japan, Russia, China, Spain and Canada. I would sincerely like to know how you as a member of BIID feel about our international relations.

"Let us know where should the BIID be making the most effort to create opportunities if you have a desire to seriously explore a market abroad.

"I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Simon Hamilton
BIID International Director"

International Update:

INDIA

With a strong historical and cultural relationship between the UK and India
there has never been a better time to be part of this emerging market. India is
a vast country with a wealth of craftmanship and local skills. Following an
invitation from the Institute of Indian Interior Design (IIID) Simon Hamilton
spoke at the International Design Seminar in New Delhi last month. British
design is greatly respected and seriously in demand. The British Council are
organising a Design Education Seminar taking place in February 2012, so we are
proposing a trip to coincide with this major event. This would include visits to
suppliers, cultural tours and design seminars. If you think this is a market you
would like to be part of then please contact the BIID office who will direct
your interest to Simon Hamilton.

MIDDLE EAST

Lynne Hunt London are currently working in Aqaba, Jordan on a couple of projects for Ayla. We have put together schemes for The Grand Hyatt in Aqaba and also luxury Ayla Island Marina Apartments. The Island Marina apartments will offer luxury living to this inspirational development on the Aqaba coast on the Red Sea which will become an Arabian Venice.

ITALY: Expocasa, Turin

Set in the vibrant and underground city of Turin, Expocasa is growing each year for being a more approachable and understated furniture fair - espcially compared to Milan. Set within the former FIAT headquarter (called "Lingotto"), Expocasa is based on the university area of Turin, a city which has changed dramatically in the last 10 years. Becoming a very cool city as opposed to the typically pictured foggy, conservative boring former Italian capital. To name a few, the following international brands are based around the area - Alessi, Giugiaro, Poninfarina, Lavazza and Kinder-Ferrero (read Nutella and Ferrero Rocher). To give you another flavour of the city, the fair is close to one of most revolutionary places which is setting a new concept in the world industry, we sell what we cook, we cook what we sell. They just opened a branch in New York. Back to the point, the next exhibition is on 3rd-11th March 2012

CANADA:The Interior Design Show

The Interior Design Show is an annual event which takes place in the design city of Canada, Toronto. The event is well respected all over Canada and even pulls visitors from Chicago, New York as well as Europe. With support form the UKTI, the BIID have been invited to participate in this high end event in January 2012, which could serve as a conduit to Canada's very healthy residential property market.

MOROCCO: Trade Mission

BIID designer Adrienne Chinn, a frequent visitor to Morocco, is researching a potential 3-day Trade Mission with the UKTI in Casablanca to meet with key design decision-makers including property developers, hoteliers and members of government. A good understanding of French would be recommended for these meetings. Please contact Adrienne if you are interested in participating.

London Design Festival

September is one of the busiest months of the year for UK interior design and September 2011 did not disappoint. The BIID was pleased to provide two vibrant sessions at 100% Design. Shashi Caan, President of the International Federation of Interior Architects and Designers (IFI) kicked off the BIID sponsored talks and captivated a packed audience with her lecture called ‘Re-thinking Design and Interiors'. The lecture was based on her new book with the same title and Shashi presented a holistic view of what interior design should be and the challenges designers face in our ever-changing world. Shashi's talk was followed by the BIID discussion panel ‘The Future of Design'. BIID' Education Director, Sue Timney, chaired the discussion which explored key-drivers in the design world, including technology, legislation, sustainability and education. Sue was joined on the panel by Shashi Caan (IFI), BIID Members Staffan Tollgard and Mark Bithrey and lighting design expert Lucy Martin.

Decorex opened its doors on the Sunday with a VIP Members breakfast hosted by the French Furniture Industries before BIID Member, Dan Hopwood, Head of the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Committee, opened the seminar programme to yet another full house. Dan's talk, ‘The Confessions of an Interior Designer', was an insightful and humorous start to the day with the aim of educating his spectators through examining how he had grown into the experienced interior designer he is today through failing and learning.

Although100%Design and Decorex were the biggest shows London design festival still had much more to offer. BIID President Diana Yakeley was determined to take full advantage of all the shows and exhibitions and represented the BIID at multiple events.

Tent London has become a well established exhibition in east London's trendy brick lane. This year they decided to expand and opened Superbrands as an addition to the original exhibition. The BIID wanted to give its support and Superbrands offered free entry for BIID members. Tent London and Superbrands made brick lane buzz with even more life than usual and Diana Yakeley found the new exhibition very exciting.

This year also saw the exhibitions Design Junction and Tramshed making a mark during the festival. Design Junction held their UK launch party together with Architect Review (AR), showcasing designers at Victoria House. Tramshed was on its second year and had a range of young product designers on board. It will be exciting to see what these exhibitions will offer next year.

Hazle McCormack Young Shortlisted for RICS Award

Photographer: Sarah J Duncan

Hazel McCormack Young LLP, home to BIID member Neil Trett, have been
shortlisted in the Community Benefit category for the South East in the
2011 RICS Awards.
The Bridge Dartford is Kent County Council's first purpose-built
lifelong learning and community campus bringing together various KCC
services and agencies under one roof. The brief required a building to
act as a focus for the new development at The Bridge site.

The
building includes a two form entry primary school for up to 420
children, a 26-place Early Years Centre, a first floor youth centre
specialising in music and the arts, adult education facilities, library
access point, a community meeting room, police point, Adult and Children
Social Services, a health consulting room and central reception. As the
school is new, it has been phased to allow the pupil numbers to grow
organically and is currently based on a one form entry format.

The
school and community facilities are designed to raise aspirations about
learning and will be a focus for community learning within the new
‘Bridge' development. The building will provide a place for the
community which blurs the boundaries between formal and informal
learning and provide a strong link between home, school, the community, health and social services.

The
building's environmental features include rainwater harvesting, natural
ventilation and ETFE covered atria to the school and central ‘hub',
designed to maximise daylight within the centre of the school. The
building is designed to achieve a ‘Very Good' BREEAM rating.

Another Successful Annual General Meeting

Designers turned out in record numbers last week to enjoy a day-long programme of invaluable education and networking events, including the British Institute of Interior Design (BIID)'s Annual General Meeting (AGM), its inaugural Annual Lecture and the annual BIID Summer Party. The AGM took place at RIBA's London HQ, Portland Place, London on Wednesday 29th June. BIID President, Jenny Gibbs outlined the Institute's extensive achievements in the year and also looked forward to new initiatives designed to help members succeed in their businesses and maintain the high professional standards required of BIID membership. Jenny's review covered a series of significant developments over the past twelve months. These included:

•	a continuing voice for the interior design industry in Government through the BIID's presence on the Construction Industry Council and associated Groups improving Building Codes and Regulations.
•	the outstanding BIID Retrofit Conference and inaugural BIID Retrofit and Sustainable Product Awards.
•	the publication of the BIID/RIBA Contract - ID10 as part of a growing suite of professional publications now available to interior design practitioners;
•	a series of trade missions and development initiatives to help grow business opportunities for members overseas, including continuing representation on the International Federation of Interior Designers / Architects (IFI);
•	successful BIID Regional Roadshows in Brighton and Glasgow;
•	the revision of the Group Practice Scheme to build strong working relationships with key group practices;
•	a new CPD directory for Industry Partner members and a series of successful business showcase and networking events;
•	the first Annual Forum in March allowing members a platform to exchange ideas on important issues;
•	and, key improvements in member communications, including a new e-newsletter, the @BIIDtalk twitter account and a dedicated BIID discussion Group on LinkedIn;

Preceding the AGM, the BIID's first-ever Annual Lecture, delivered by author, broadcaster and management consultant Peter York, also proved exceptionally popular and a packed afternoon session saw Colin Jones, a partner at Hewitsons and head of the Cambridge Construction Team enlighten designers on the legal implications arising from selling, supplying and sourcing FF&E. Throughout the day, delegates also took the opportunity to talk to BIID industry partners in a special showcase hosted in the RIBA Gallery. Those taking part here include Ben Whistler, RSAV Solutions, Samuel Heath, Muralto, S.M.K. srl, Sandringham Carpets, Deanswood, Savoir Beds, Easyart Ltd and Smith of Derby. "Today has been a wonderfully useful, educational and entertaining day for BIID members" enthused Jenny Gibbs. "We are delighted that so many designers attended our talks, the AGM and the evening Summer party. The feedback has been incredibly positive and I can confirm that the Institute is in excellent shape as we look forward to more growth and greater success in the year ahead".

Margo Selby Showroom Tour

"It was a really interesting and informative event, presenting the
designer's work in such detail and proximity and providing an
opportunity to ask questions and talk to Margo."

Hayley Manning,
Head of Associate and Student Committee: This month, we held an event at
Margo Selby's showroom and studio in Bloomsbury for the Student &
Associate members of the British Institute of Interior Design (BIID).
It was an opportunity for us to learn about Margo's work in more detail
and understand her career path as a textile designer.

Her 3D
effect, hand woven fabrics and use of vibrant colour are what
characterise her work and it's this unique look that has won her many
interesting commissions. Margo seems to be most happy when working in
collaboration, be them interior, fashion, or even ceramic designers. A
truly talented and inspiring designer!

"It was great to see the
very personable face behind a fantastic, vibrant business. Margo is an
understated yet obviously tenacious young lady who is a real
inspiration.
As a designer, I found her talk very engaging and hope to incorporate some of her fabrics in to my future projects."

There
is always something new, interesting and fun in the showroom to look at
(and even buy!) and she has just released her first pattern books for
the Interior Design market, so get yourselves down there and immerse
yourself in colour and texture!

BIID at the Olympia Fine Arts and Antiques Fair

There was a packed house at the Olympia Fine Arts and
Antiques Fair yesterday for presentations given by leading interior designers
Christopher Vane Percy and Joanna Wood of the British Institute of Interior
Design.

Christopher’s extraordinary knowledge of interior styles
and restoration shone through his fascinating talk which included his
award-winning work at the Garrick Club. This was brilliantly complemented by
Joanne’s more contemporary interiors where she showed just how effectively the
use of carefully chosen antique pieces can ground and enhance a
scheme.

The feedback at the reception that followed was very
positive and there was much to discuss, not least the news
that Mick Jagger had just arrived at the Fair!

Neville Johnson hosts free tech integration event with Kensington Home Technology

BIID Industry Partner members Neville Johnson are hosting a free tech integration event at their brand new London showroom, in conjunction with Kensington Home Technology.
Ricardo Penswick from AV specialists, says: "At KHT, we aim to give clients entertainment in every room without affecting the beautiful interior design that we all expect from the modern home. At the same time interior designers working with us are often confused by cabling such as CAT5 or CAT6 and new technologies such as Apple TVs or Sonos Music. To be able to
hide all the cables, DVD players and Sky boxes so that all you are left to look at is a screen often means designing bespoke furniture to work around the television and our equipment. Likewise for music, custom bookcases can hold speakers, or simply hide the equipment for music with sound coming out of plastered-in speakers which are totally invisible and a favourite of interior designers. With this in mind, KHT and Neville Johnson are combining the three aspects of bringing a beautiful but technology filled room together - the interior designer, the bespoke furniture maker and the technology company - in an instructive CPD"

Time: 5pm-9pm

Date: 23rd June 2011

Location: Neville Johson, 3 Wigmore Street, London

Designing the Future - Why Intellectual Property (IP) Protection Matters

WIP Day (26th April 2011), sees the launch of ACID’s (Anti
Copying in Design) IP Tracker www.acidtrading.eu.com/acid-ip-tracker,
a simple digital method of tracking delivery of IP led and confidential
information. It is an electronic addition to the ACID Design Data Bank which
holds over 350,000 copies of unregistered designs. The IP Tracker will be an
additional tool ensuring a further layer of IP awareness. Initially discussed
in 2007, the process was developed after ACID Member and designer John
Coleman’s feedback indicated that there was an increasing need for an
electronic sending service which would underpin the user’s IP Rights without
appearing threatening or unattractive to a potential client or collaborator.

ACID ambassador and designer
Sebastian Conran, "An
unintended consequence of digital technology is the dissemination & theft
of identities, ideas and designs... The ACID IP Tracker provides unequivocal
dated evidence for files in digital transit - simply, efficiently and
effectively."

Dids Macdonald, ACID’s CEO said, “Most micro enterprises and SMEs cannot afford to go to Court over infringement, so the most
important element of IP protection is a deterrent and preventative strategy,
particularly when sending sensitive information to a third party. Importantly,
providing receipted evidence of sending reverses the burden of proof and makes
it easier to take action.”

A very Special Relationship - Happy Anniversary IIDA and BIID

Ten exciting years ago, in the interests of combining resources and talents, the British chapter of IIDA and what is now the British Institute of
Interior Design (BIID) came together to form one association to represent the very best of professional interior designers working on both sides of the Atlantic.
There has always been a synergy between designers working in America and the UK both historically and culturally, and a constant flow of projects commissioned by clients with properties internationally, creates a need for co-operation and reciprocity. The language may be the same but the codes and regulations are not, and it is a valuable resource to be
able to have a dialogue with those who hold the same standards of professional competence and knowledge.
The BIID is proud of its long and continuing history of collaboration and friendship with IIDA and of our many respected members who hold dual membership and Fellowship of the IIDA, Henrietta Spencer Churchill, Tessa Kennedy, Christopher Vane Percy, Kate Ainslie Williams and Lori Pinkerton-Rolet to name just a few.
Much has changed over the ten years, with the ease of electronic communication, the need to save resources and reduce our carbon footprint and to raise the professional standards of practice, but the aims and ideals of the two organisations have remained the same.
Happy Anniversary to us!

By 11.30am the Design
Centre was already buzzing and members much enjoyed Brunch at the Design Club
and opportunity to network at the start of Design Week. The interactive session that followed, was
absolutely packed out and Giles Kime chaired a fascinating discussion panel on
different aspects of Bespoke Design with Kit Kemp, Helen Green and Steffan
Tollgard. Delegates much enjoyed the very eloquent and inspirational input of
all three speakers and the supporting visual presentation.

Launch of Swarovski Elements Collection

Swarovski threw a
glamorous party last Thursday, at 33
Portland Place, to launch their new wallpaper
collection, masterminded by Anthony Evans, previously MD of Cole & Son
Wallpapers and designed by Karen Beauchamp.
The wallpaper was effectively displayed amongst shimmering candelabras,
tea-lights and quirky touches in several rooms including the one now famous as
the location for filming the speech therapy sessions in the Oscar winning film “The
King’s Speech". Everyone I spoke to
agreed that the wallpapers were stunning - very subtle, textured and luxurious.

BIID Retrofit Conference and Awards

The British Institute of Interior Design
(BIID) held its first conference on Friday, 11 March, which revealed the
secrets to lowering the carbon emissions of the UK’s older housing stock. Around
150 professional interior designers attended the Retrofit Conference,
which was held at Chelsea Harbour Design Centre in London, and closed with the presentation of
first Retrofit Design Awards.

Conference delegates heard from more than
a dozen leading experts in environmentally friendly retrofit design, including
designer Wayne Hemingway; Katy Lithgow, Head Conservator at the
National Trust; and lighting designer Sally Storey.

The day began with a talk from the
Government’s Chief Construction Adviser, Paul Morrell, who stressed the
urgency of addressing the causes and effects of climate change, and set out the
scale of the problem. The Government, he explained, was aiming for an 80% cut in
carbon emissions from housing by 2050 – but while new homes were being built to
stricter environmental standards, that still left around 25 million older homes
urgently in need of improvement. If improvements weren’t made voluntary, he
warned: “We will have to tell people at some point that their houses are
illegal.”

The next speaker was Colin Butfield,
Head of Campaigns at wildlife charity WWF-UK. He told delegates that being
green had to be made “more affordable, more attractive and more normal” .The charity
runs the Great British Refurb Campaign, which aims to show how low-cost
improvements to older housing can make a big difference to both carbon
emissions and comfort.

Oliver Novakovic, Director of Housing Futures at BRE (Building
Research Establishment), urged designers to take a dual approach – creating
buildings that use less energy and buying energy efficient products, and he
revealed the cost of improving a building’s carbon footprint - £4,000 for a 40
per cent reduction in carbon emissions, up to a staggering £300,000 to turn an
older property into a zero carbon home. James Pack, Director of
construction company Skansen, followed on by explaining the Ska Rating, an
assessment tool for sustainable fit-outs.

While new homes are designed to be air-tight
to keep heating costs low, Head Conservator of the National Trust, Katy
Lithgow, warned that in older properties this can cause excess humidity,
damaging furniture and fittings and leading to poor air quality. She
spoke of the wide range of approaches that the Trust was taking to improve the
carbon footprint of its housing stock, from radical solutions such as
photovoltaic ‘slates’ at Kynance Cove and solar panels at Dunster Castle, to
traditional methods such as blinds, heavy curtains and shutters.

Design Director at John Cullen Lighting, Sally
Storey, explained how the new Part L Building Regulations mean that three
quarters of lights in a project must now be low energy. She explained the types
of lamp and how to use them, and also illuminated the audience on the new
system of light bulb packaging which will see light brightness
measured in Lumens rather than in Watts.

Sustainable Design Enabler and author of
The Eco-Design Handbook, Alastair Fuad-Luke, then presented what he
called a toolkit for more holistic design. This 10-point plan urged designers
to consider points such as the ‘embedded energy’ of an existing item before
choosing whether to replace it, and moving towards a ‘closed loop’ whereby
products can be constantly recycled. “The real skill you can bring is how to
make all this eco stuff desirable,” he told the audience.

A panel discussion chaired by idFX
magazine editor Kate Burnett brought together Fuad-Luke with Glen
Irwin (Sustainability Director at Gifford); Lucy Pedler (architect
and founder of The Green Register), and MD of Parity Projects, Russell Smith.
A lively discussion ensued, covering such topics as how to choose a green team
and how to engage clients with environmental issues. Lucy Pedler was critical
of the slow pace of change: “We are mired in inertia, in this county you just
want business as usual, get the job done and go down the pub,” she complained.
“I want to quadruple energy prices – as soon as your pocket is hit, things will
change. I’m a big fan of sticks, I’ve gone off carrots.”

The final speaker of the day was Wayne
Hemmingway, who gave a hilarious account of the thriftiness of his
upbringing, and how his granddad’s ability to fix the cracked soles of Dr
Martens boots with a soldering iron led to the teenager making thousands of
pounds on Camden Market. He went on to describe some of the refurbishments of
old blocks of flats and housing estates that his company was currently
undertaking, and how these were changing the lives of residents.
“Sustainability is about a lot more than how a building performs,” he says.
“It’s about how a building is loved.”

SHH lead all-star cast in design of Barbican Foodhall and Barbican Lounge

Architects and designers SHH
have brought together and led an all-star team – including furniture designer Stefan Bench, lighting designers .PSLAB and Chelsea Flower Show
double-gold medallist garden designer Kate
Gould – to create two stunning new restaurant spaces
within one of London’s greatest 20th century architectural
landmarks, the Barbican Centre.

SHH answered a brief
from the Barbican to make the most
of the location within this iconic building envelope, in order to create the
new environments, which aim to become known as destination venues in their own
right. According to SHH’s lead designer on
the project Helen Hughes, the
project ‘sought to bring the Centre’s
food and beverage offer up to the level of the Barbican’s long-established worldwide
reputation for art exhibitions and performances.’

SHH served both as
interior and branding designer on the project, which encompassed both the
former 450sq m ground floor café, now a restaurant and shop, re-branded as ‘Barbican Foodhall’, and the first
floor bar and restaurant - now ‘Barbican
Lounge’, as well as the outdoor terrace spaces for both venues.

Jamie Hempsall wins regional award in UK Property Awards 2010

Jamie Hempsall, BIID has
won the award for Best Interior Design – North East, UK
at the UK Property Awards 2010 in Association with Bloomberg Television for his
project “The Beeches” a four storey Victorian Property in Lancashire.
This was a complete renovation project involving 27 rooms and completed over a
period of two years. The project transformed an unloved residence with a
large number of redundant rooms and a layout more suitable to a family with a
large domestic staff into a stylish, modern family home designed to keep the
family in easy proximity of each other despite its proportions. The
design ensured that flows throughout the property became more logical for usage
in the 21st Century and included an eco-friendly pellet boiler to
power under-floor heating ensuring the residence remained a warm and
ecologically sound environment for its owners.

Jamie collected from the
chair of the judging panel, Helen Shield – Editor in Chief of International
Homes Magazine, at the awards ceremony at the Royal Lancaster Hotel on Saturday
27th November 2010. Other members of the judging panel
included Iris Dunbar (Past President – BIID) and Diana Yakeley (Vice President
BIID).

Surface Design Show for Material Thinkers

Surface Design Show is unique in the UK, focusing
exclusively on surfaces for building design. Architects, interior designers and
building specifiers can get within touching distance of hundreds of
inspirational interior and exterior surface products.

The 2011 event will be working with The British Institute of Interior Design and all
BIID members will be invited to attend the Surface Design Show.

Now in its eighth year, Surface Design Show is set to
inspire, inform and innovate. New to this year’s show is the Material Thinking
theme. Nothing is achieved without thinking. It is time to celebrate how
thinking bombards material and surface innovation. We think about a problem and
resolve it by developing a material. This year Surface Design Show is working
with Annabelle Filer of SCIN to develop the Fringe Thinking programme of
events, features, debates and seminars that excite, stimulate and amuse
visitors around the core theme Material Thinking.

The Material Thinkers feature, Architects &
Designers in Practice, is an installation focusing on material innovation and
creative ideas currently being developed. This inspiring feature will highlight
a number of individual designers, architects and manufacturers who are true
originators. The installation will celebrate the power of human imagination,
enabling visitors to engage, connect and contribute to each project through its
various stages of development – a true work in progress.

The evenings have been rejuvenated and return with a
RIBA Buildings Futures inspirational live debate “This house believes the value
of design is not measurable” – How can the unquantifiable qualities of design
compete during a downturn?. Followed by hugely popular Pecha Kucha 20x20, a
simple presentation format where participants show 20 images, each for 20
seconds - keeping it concise and moving at a rapid pace.

Following on the theme of Material Thinking the CPD seminars
run in conjunction with CIAT CPD, RIBA CPD, BRE Green Guide and RIBA London
Lunchtime Portraits – offering real insights into the future of building
design.

The Unique French Touch at the French Embassy

I checked in just behind
Janice Morley editor of the Homes & Property section of the Evening
Standard, who is delighted by the increased circulation the paper now has, and
we just had time to slip into our seats before a warm welcome from the French
Ambassador, His Excellency Maurice Gourdault-Montagne.

“The Unique French Touch”
was a promotional evening for the Paris Fashion and Home Design trade shows and
guests included luminaries such as Terence Conran and Mary Fox Linton. Journalist Catherine Galloway did an
excellent job on hosting a series of panel discussions and at the subsequent
champagne reception, I reflected that we could certainly learn something from
this event about how we might promote British Interior Design more effectively

Christopher Vane Percy presented with The Garrick Medal

At a special evening to celebrate the
completion of 13 years restoring the Garrick Club’s interiors, the Club
Chairman, Acton Davis, presented Christopher Vane Percy with The Garrick
Medal. The medal, first awarded in 2000,
was conceived as a way of thanking people who have contributed more than could
normally have been expected to the life of the Club.

In thanking the Chairman, Christopher Vane
Percy emphasized the importance of the support he had received from the Works
of Art Committee and from all of the ‘team’ involved in restoring the Garrick’s
High Victorian Clubland Style.

“The Garrick may be first and foremost a club, but, as
guardian of the world’s greatest collection of theatrical paintings, it now has
a coherence and gravitas which, in the past, was sadly lacking. For me it has been a great joy, and also a
great honour, to have been a part of this achievement”.

The medal, of which only five have been awarded to
date, is based on the Lewis Pingo medal of 1772. This celebrated design was the source of the
very important Wedgwood Jasperware portrait of Garrick himself.

Soane presented Luxury Craftsmanship Award by Walpole

Awarded to the British brand that
has shown the most imaginative and greatest commitment to the support and
development of a craft in luxury, Soane is thrilled to have been presented the
2010 Walpole
award for Luxury Craftsmanship.

Combining today’s technology with
traditional skills, ALL of Soane’s furniture and lighting is made in Britain,
thus promoting British excellence worldwide and at the same time nurturing the
craftsmen whose brilliance Soane profoundly believes in.

Lulu Lytle, founder of Soane
comments:

“Having been warned by many people
over the last 13 years that manufacturing solely in Britain is simply not
viable, I feel this award is really for all the exceptional workshops with whom
Soane collaborates and justifies their determination to pursue their crafts in
Britain”

The quality of the craftsmanship
and consequent flexibility in production are what sets Soane apart. Soane Britain
has great faith in Britain’s
traditional skills such as iron forging, saddlery, cabinet-making and bronze casting. Producing the hand-made collection in the UK allows
production and quality to be relentlessly monitored.

Soane
now produce over 500 pieces, all in Britain. As well as the 21st
century interpretations of exceptional 18th, 19th and 20th
century originals Soane produces its own collection of furniture, lighting,
door handles, glass and silverware.

Climate Week Reception

When Anna Whitehead,
(Environmental Committee founder) and I accepted an invitation to attend the
Reception at Westminster Hall for the Launch of Climate Week, we were not
prepared for the exceptional support this initiative has already achieved with
over 800 delegates in attendance.
Supported by government the aim of this project is to provide a catalyst
to engage and inspire all parts of society to seek change and solutions,
through the organisations and networks they are involved in.

It is the brainchild of
social campaigner, Kevin Steele, who has worked closely with government on
issues such as social action, enterprise and the Big Society and run successful
campaigns such as Global Entrepreneurship Week and the fantastically successful
community project - The Big Lunch.

Gathered to hear the
introduction from Gregory Barker MP, Minister for Energy and Climate Change,
and speeches from senior management from headline partners EDF Energy, Aviva,
Royal Bank of Scotland,
Tesco and Kellogs, was an extraordinarily broad range of representation. This included business, culture and sport,
education, embassies, fashion, media, professional associations and unions,
public sector and statutory bodies, religious organisations, science,
think-tanks, voluntary sector and campaigns, parliamentarians, government and
local government.

Jenny Gibbs, BIID President

Climate Week, on 21-27 March 2011, is a national occasion that
offers an annual renewal of our ambition and confidence to combat climate
change. It is for everyone wanting to do their bit to protect our planet and
create a secure future.

Strawberry Hill - Horace Walpole's Gothic Castle is now open

Until now, Strawberry Hill House
in leafy suburban Twickenham has been rather difficult to visit. Not any
more: one of the most extraordinary houses in England, it has undergone a
remarkable feat of painstaking conservation thanks to funding by the Heritage
Lottery fund, English Heritage and the World Monuments Fund amongst many
others. Members of BIID donned hard hats in June to see the work in
progress on one of the most remarkable examples of Georgian Gothic revival
architecture in Britain,
being undertaken by Inskip and Jenkins, conservation architects.

Horace Walpole, son of England's first
Prime Minister and man of letters, transformed a smaller existing building into
this Gothic fantasy of towers, battlements and rooms of highly decorated ceilings,
fireplaces, cabinetry and coloured glass windows. But it was in the
details that even the more modernist could find inspiring. Pocketed internal
shutters allowed the beauty of the ornate windows to be seen uncluttered during
the day, hidden at night, sliding from their unseen recesses. Beautifully
engineered brass latches invisibly recessed into the shutters' edge would
delight the most minimalist designer today. Work had revealed elegant
copperplate handwriting penned directly onto a wall by an early (and chilly)
craftsman in January 1857 which showed the weather to be "cold but no
fires allowed." We marveled at the ornate library, where books were
concealed behind wide but delicate arched gothic joinery panels, which swung
out, slightly alarmingly, across the room to allow access to the books,
before swinging effortlessly back into place over the spines of Walpole's
collection.

Everywhere earnest young people
were wielding scalpels over more recent wallpapers and paints, revealing
delights beneath. Paint sampling carried out by expert Catherine Hassall had
revealed a fragment of grey paint on the walls to the staircase. How
delicious to climb the stairs painted in this subdued hue and to then
be surprised by explosions of colour and light at the next floor.

The wonderfully modest Peter
Inskip gave an in depth explanation of the research which had gone into the
conservation work before leading us around the house and up on to the roof.
Everywhere workmen and women were still involved with the restoration work
which is optimistically due for completion on Walpole's birthday, the 24th September.
As Walpole
is quoted to have said:

"I have carpenters to
direct, plasterers to hurry, papermen to scold, and glaziers to help: this last
is my greatest pleasure: I have amassed such quantities of painted glass, that
every window in my castle will be illuminated with it: the adjusting and
disposing it is vast amusement".

One hopes the specialist builders, Bowman & Sons
found the same amusement in meeting this
more recent deadline.

Our thanks are due to Christopher Vane Percy who
meticulously organised the visit and persuaded the eloquent Peter Inskip to
take time out to talk to us only hours before flying to America where
he is working on Louis Khan’s gallery at Yale.

Competition launches to find Britain's Best Home Renovation - offering 5,000 prize

Britain's home owners spend £11 billion a year* on home renovations
and over the past two years of economic uncertainty more and more of us have improved or extended our homes rather than moving.
When people do move, a home's renovation is often a trigger to move up
the ladder. Fifteen percent of all homes listed on Primelocation.com (or nearly
100,000 properties) have been wholly or partly renovated recently.
To highlight this and celebrate the nation's passion for home renovation, decoration and interior design, Britain's Best Home Renovation
Competition has been launched, looking for the country's ultimate home makeover
project.
"The judges will be looking out
for breadth of vision and searching for a very special home renovation project
that's gone that extra mile creatively," Amber Rampley, marketing director at Winkworth, one of the UK's leading estate agents and main sponsor of the competition.
The renovation has to have been
completed between September 1st 2009 and 30th September 2010 within a property
owned by anyone entering the competition, and each entrant will be asked to submit a short "pitch" of between 300 and 500 words, details of the property and its address, and pictures before and after pictures.
All entries to the competition
will be judged in the first instance by a panel of interior design experts
including representatives from the British Institute of Interior Design, after which a short list of up to ten properties will be visited by judges and a winner announced.
Britain's Best Home Renovation Competition is being organised by
Primelocation.com, sponsored by estate agent Winkworth and supported by the
British Institute of Interior Design.

Sue Timney MAKING MARKS and the Design of Timney-Fowler

Foreword by Sir Paul
Smith
Published by Pointed Leaf Press September 2010

Making Marks is a journey through a fascinating life. Perhaps it is her
peripatetic childhood that has given her a global vision. Born in Libya
to a an Indian Army father, after attending twelve schools worldwide, Sue
launched a career in Japan from a Royal College of Art Travelling Scholarship.
She then opened the first Timney-Fowler shop in London’s hip Portobello area which launched
her successful career as an interior and lifestyle designer. An exhibition “ Sue Timney and the Design
of Timney Fowler” opens on the 19th
November 2010 at the Fashion and Textiles
Museum in London.

Sue will be signing copies of her Book at the RIBA BOOKSHOP, Design Centre
Chelsea Harbour
on the 28th September at 1.30pm.

Murray and Murray shortlisted for the IDFX 'Best Kitchen' 2010

As a resident of Edinburgh, this client purchased two adjoining seaside
cottages in the East Neuk of Fife with a view
to converting and extending to create a large holiday home fit for modern
family living.

The open plan kitchen
space is the central hub of the home where all other areas of the house are reached
from & with direct access to the beach.
The layout had to be conducive to the many thoroughfares throughout the
space without looking too disjointed.
The island unit was designed in the shape of a speech mark or as some
describe it like the Nike swoosh. The gentle
curved back panel follows the natural path from the entrance to the informal
snug area, protecting the working areas of the kitchen from the rest of the
room.

The brief was also to
create a kitchen that lent itself to the large, tranquil, light filled space
with many of the kitchen appliances and functions hidden from view in an
effort to retain a minimalist aesthetic.
This was achieved by stacking the Gaggenau cooking appliances on top of
one another & hiding them from view behind the structural nib outside the
utility room door. To the left of the
fridge freezer sits a breakfast cupboard with gull wing style doors which
cleverly conceal the coffee machine, kettle, toaster & milk frother. The flush mounted glass hob is set down on
the lower level of the island out of immediate view with a Guttman retractable
wave shaped down draft extractor behind.

The colours, materials
& finishes were to compliment the seaside feel without looking too
contrived. The bespoke cabinetry was
crafted from olive ash due to its pale colour & distinctive rippled
lines. This was finished with a white
wax to create a limed, driftwood type effect which also helped differentiate it
from the pale limestone floor. Atlantic
Blue limestone with it’s watery like pattern & mixture of muted bluey green
tones made it an ideal choice for the countertops. In sharp contrast the breakfast bar counter
top was made from Pyro Lave which is Volcanic lava rock sourced from the Volvic
region of France. The precise colour was matched to the
interior of the glazed cabinets above the sink area to retain coherency of
accent throughout. A simple Carrara marble back
splash behind the sink helps to retain the feeling of light & space below
the floating glazed wall cabinets above.

The conception of the
project began as far back as 2007, but due to the lengthy planning process
& extensive building work involved it was January 2009 before the kitchen was
finally installed.

Gilt and Gloss Design shortlisted for the IDFX 'Best Residential Project' 2010

Gilt &
Gloss decorated this new build 9000sq ft house in an amazingly short 5 month
period from inception to completion. The aim was to instill a sense of period,
authenticity and character back into this luxury family home. Painstaking
detail was paid to every aspect, most pieces of furniture were custom designed
by Gilt & Gloss with special attention given to the use of bespoke
finishes. Luxurious fabrics were selected, silk and hand-painted wallpapers,
horse hair panels, beaten metal handles, brass inlays and custom coloured rugs
all added to the final look of understated sophistication and timelessness.

Regions are doing it for themselves

A
large group of members from near and far braved a rather bracing summer day by
the sea to attend a BIID seminar at the University of Brighton Design Archives. Thought provoking lectures on eco design from
Oliver Heath and art glass by Mike Johansson were followed by lunch and a tour
of the sumptuous, but not very eco-friendly Royal Pavilion - conserving energy
was not top of George IV’s priority list with winter banquets lit by gas lamps
above the glazed roof as well as awe-inspiringly huge chinoiserie chandeliers
inside.

Back
to the University in the afternoon, where BIID members were joined by South
Coast Design Forum and RIBA members for a lecture by Dr Catherine Moriarty on the Design Archive and a panel discussion on that
old chestnut, interior designers vs. architects. Well done to the Southern Region Committee
for their hard work in organising a fascinating day

Opportunities in China

Adrienne Chinn
attended the recent UKTI China Revealed Event where speakers included
representatives of the UK
and Chinese Governments. She reports
that there are considerable opportunities for foreign business in China and this
is welcomed by the Chinese Government which has made the decision to open the
country to foreign investment.

Modern
architecture is much in demand and the Chinese see the UK as a world
leader in design. The Chinese can be
excellent clients encouraging designers to push the boundaries of design and
there is also a potential international and ex-pat market based in the country
as well.

The right
approach and understanding cultural differences are vital to success, and it is
essential to find a local partner, develop relationships and networks and establish a track record in the country. Expert advice can make all the difference and
the London Development Agency and the UKTI are supporting British business
development in China. The UKTI is putting together some specific
trade missions next spring and it is to be hoped that these will include a
design-related mission. Adrienne’s view
is that this would provide an opportunity not to be missed.

Another successful Student Mentoring Programme

In
conjunction with World Interiors Day, organised by the International Federation
of Interior Architects/Designers (IFI), the BIID recently completed its 3rd Annual
Student Mentoring Programme. Nearly 40 students participated this year with
placements across the UK
and abroad. Students participating undertook a wide variety of tasks such as space
planning, sourcing products, checking prices, assisting with CAD and hand drawings,
attending site visits and updating reference libraries, all of which enabled
them to experience the day to day work of being an interior designer. BIID
members based in the UK, Australia and Qatar have also undertaken email
mentoring, giving students a unique insight into international interior design
practice. Here is a sample of some of the feedback we received:

“I
completed my mentoring placement with Rosemary Hamilton and I just wanted to
say that I had a fantastic 2 days. Rosemary was lovely and very
informative and I just wanted to thank you for organising this event as it has
been an invaluable experience.”

Amanda
McCorkell, student

“The
students who come to our company on the Student Mentoring Programme are always
genuinely enthusiastic about our work. We encourage the students to take
with them as much information as possible, including trade publications,
details of suppliers and specialist products, so that they can digest the
information at their leisure.”

Georgina Hoyle, BIID, Redbridge Interiors

“During
my 2 day placement with Caz Myers she kindly lined up a variety of meetings so
that we had a busy schedule to maximize our time. We went sofa and flooring
sourcing with one of her clients and subsequently visited the clients property
with a supplier to measure up for the flooring that was selected. I helped Caz
to prepare a cost comparison document for some kitchen appliances which was
a great exercise and then she talked me through one of her projects start to
finish, including her standard business procedures. I found the experience
utterly brilliant and wanted to thank the BIID and Caz for such an amazing
opportunity. I really appreciated Caz making the time for me in her busy schedule
and it was a real privilege to spend some time with such a talented and
inspiring person. It also confirmed to me that I am taking the right path in
terms of my career choice and I am very excited about the future.”

Emma
Diffey, student

“I
really enjoyed the mentoring experience. It is always good to help
the younger generation along. Nicola Chesham was marvellous - what a bright
spark! She is definitely one to watch.”

Genny
Henderson, BIID, The Room Company

"The
student mentoring week organised by BIID was hugely anticipated and thoroughly
enjoyed. I spent my day with Beverley Barnett who spent the day answering my
thousand questions and took me along on all her meetings of the day. This work
experience gave me a vital insight into the amount of administration and
project management which goes on in the daily life of an interior designer. I
learnt that organisational and people skills are as important as the creative
side of things. The day gave me valuable insight into the activities we can't
possibly learn on an Open-Learning Diploma and which made me all the more
determined to succeed."

Stephanie
Baker, student

“We
are really committed to taking students at Tessuto. After 18 years in our
wonderful, complex, fast changing industry it is so important to give something
back to those who are keen to enter the profession. Society is just beginning
to wake up to the impact that the built environment has on all of us. Interior
designers will spearhead this force for change, and it is essential that we
nurture and encourage talented and passionate individuals who wish to join us.”

Susie
Rumbold, BIID, Tessuto

"I
was offered a five day placement with Taylor Howes Designs and I remember
how delighted I was to hear the news. During these five days spent there I was
very pleased to meet the two founders of the company, Gail Taylor and
Karen Howes, both very friendly and generous in giving me the opportunity
to work with their team of devoted designers. I spent my time working with
a wide range of samples, sourcing materials, drawing sketches and printing out
specifications for clients. They were in the middle of an important project and
I could see what it is the routine of work in a design company. I also could
gather new suppliers and retailers. It was a unique and enriching
experience which helps students studying interior design having a first contact
with their future profession. "

Laura
Dragoi, student

“We
regularly take on work experience at Taylor Howes as it gives us an insight
into new talent and as it keeps us closely connected with the student body. We
are therefore very happy that the BIID has established the Student Mentoring
Programme. It enables us to get exposed to fresh energy - which is
very important - and to see what direction education takes in the field of
interior design.”

Sandra
Dreschler, BIID, Taylor Howes

We
would like to thank the following members for their participation in the
Student Mentoring Programme:

London 2012 signs Technogym as fitness equipment supplier

The London Organising
Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) today confirmed
that Technogym has become the latest tier three supplier to London 2012.
Technogym will supply and install fitness equipment for athletes in the Athletes’
Village and other training venues, becoming Official Fitness Equipment
Supplier.

The main gym facility will
be located at the Athletes’ Village and will provide thousands of competing
athletes with top of the range fitness equipment for their event preparation.
Alongside the facility at the Athletes
Village, Technogym will
equip several gyms within the other competition and training venues by
installing a total of over 750 pieces. Technogym will also be responsible for
the design and layout of the facilities, as well providing staff and ongoing
maintenance.

London 2012 Chairman
Sebastian Coe commented, “The needs of athletes are always at the forefront of
our thinking and so ensuring we have top of the range equipment available for
their use is vital. Technogym come to us with some fantastic previous
Games-time experience and will help us to ensure that the needs of all
competitors at London 2012 are met. We welcome them to the London 2012
family and look forward to working with them over the next two years.”

Nerio Alessandri,
President and Founder of Technogym said, “This important achievement represents
a victory for the whole Technogym team. We are very proud to have been chosen
for the 5th time as the official supplier of the Olympic Games and Paralympic
Games.” He added, “London 2012 will represent a unique opportunity for UK to promote
the wellness lifestyle and attract more people to regular physical
activity”.

Technogym has been a
Summer Olympic Games sponsor since 2000 and also sponsored the Torino 2006
Winter Games. Established in 1983 in Italy,
they currently supply over 100,000 pieces of equipment across 4,000 facilities
in the UK.

BIID and ACID IP and The Interior Design Sector: How to fully protect, exploit and commercialise your IP

In the first of a series
of intellectual property seminars led by ACID
Accredited intellectual property lawyer Jo Potbury of DMH Stallard at the newly formed British
Institute of Interior Design in Chelsea Harbour, delegates heard about the
importance of protecting design drawings, registering new designs and the
creation of an intellectual property strategy.

Jo Potbury said, “I cannot
stress enough the importance of protecting your Intellectual Property rights.
Intellectual Property is a fundamental part of your business and unfortunately,
the more successful your business, the more likely you are to come under threat.”
Jo referred to Daniel Defoe’s well known quote to underpin her message, “To
print another Man’s copy is much worse than robbing him on the Highway; for the
Thief takes only what he finds about him, but the Pirate printer takes away his
inheritance [which] both is and ought to be due, not to the Author only, but of
his Family and Children.”

Using the recent Morgan versus PTT case to demonstrate some of
the problems faced by those who respond to tender opportunities and find that
their submission is used by third parties without authorisation, Jo set out
ways in which belt and braces can be placed around submissions and responses to
tender. One of the ways is to send copies of tender/pitch responses to the ACID
design data bank and ensure that the recipient is aware that a copy has been
sent to ACID. In this way, it ensures that the subject of IP ownership is raised
and asserted.

One of the objectives of
the new BIID partnership is to feature IP as an integral part of BIID’s CDP
programme and ACID is looking forward to working closely with BIID to achieve
this objective and to offer advice on IP issues which affect the interior
design sector. One of the main benefits of this partnership is a 20% discount
off ACID membership to BIID members.

To celebrate the beginning
of the ACID/BIID partnership delegates will receive a complimentary copy of the
ACID Safe Pitch Kit. In it they will find tips, guidance and advice on various
aspects of IP and some standard generic re-usable agreements which can be added
to standard terms and conditions of business. These comprise a Confidentiality
Agreement, Intellectual Property Agreement and Licence/Royalty Agreement. The
intention is that bespoke clauses can be added to personalise them to suit
particular requirements.

New All-Party Parliamentary Group for Excellence in the Built Environment

The new All-Party Parliamentary Group for Excellence in the
Built Environment was formally launched at the Construction Industry Council's
annual summer reception, held at the Institution of Civil Engineers on 7 July.

The Chairman of the new Group, Tony Baldry MP - a former
Department of the Environment Minister responsible for construction - announced
that the Group's first act will be to establish a Commission on Excellence in
the Built Environment, which will comprise Members of both Houses of
Parliament, leaders of the professions and industry groups in membership of CIC
and several independent contributors who will, he said, "challenge ideas,
thinking and Expectation from outside the Parliamentary and construction
boxes".

Launching the new Group and Commission, Mr Baldry said that
"given the country's national indebtedness, the Government understandably
is going to have concerns about affordability of building projects and clearly
is going to want to look at what can be done to achieve best value for money".
For this reason, he indicated that the first enquiry for the Commission would
be to look at how "on the one hand, we ensure good value for money, for
public spending and public procurement of construction, and on the other hand,
seek to achieve Excellence in the Built Environment".

The All-Party Parliamentary Group's primary remit will be
to present an holistic, cohesive, overarching view from all sectors of demand,
planning, designing, constructing, managing and maintaining the built
environment and its external landscape. It will seek to work closely with other
All-Party groups representing particular sectors of the built environment, such
as architecture & planning, climate change, infrastructure, building,
highway maintenance and gas safety.

The principal guest at the event was Mark Prisk MP - the
Coalition Government's Minister of State for Business and the CIC's host was
the Rt Hon Nick Raynsford, also a former Minister responsible for construction.

The reception provided an opportunity for many new MPs from
each of the main political parties to meet leaders of the built environment
professions.

At the Reception, the CIC Chief Executive, Graham Watts said”we
communicated with many prospective parliamentary candidates in the run-up to
the Election in promoting our manifesto for the Built Environment. It was very
evident that none really understood the extent and interconnectivity of the
built environment and industries. They talked about the housing industry or landscape
or civil engineering as if they were entirely isolated from one another and
that fragmentation is the industry's weakness. The new Group is an attempt to
engage parliamentarians and other serious commentators in looking at the big
strategic issues, affecting the built environment, which impact upon the lives
of every constituent."

Hill House Interiors Take Top Interiors Award

Interior designers Hill House
Interiors swept to victory at the prestigious British Homes Awards, where they
scooped top prize for their scheme for the latest Show House at Richmond Lock,
Octagon’s development of luxury family homes on the banks of the River Thames.

The award, which is sponsored by
BIID (British Institute of Interior Design) was given to Hill House Interiors
for this flagship development situated on The Grand Terrace. Hill House
Interiors in its innovative style was able to demonstrate the flexible living
space of this spacious 5 bedroom townhouse, and to contrast its classical
period exterior by focusing on a contemporary theme,

Helen Bygraves, Co Director at Hill
House Interiors comments:

“We have enjoyed the challenge of
creating three very different schemes for each of the three Richmond Lock Show
houses that Hill House Interiors have designed . The common denominator
has been contemporary luxury, using spectacular fabrics, bespoke furniture and
lighting, along with tactile wall and floor coverings that create a beautiful
and comfortable family home. ”

Pathway for Professional Interior Designers

The British Institute of Interior Design (BIID) and the Interior Design
Association (IDA) have agreed to collaborate on the development of a Pathway
for Professional Interior Designers. For the first time, there will be a scheme
for all areas of the interior design industry that will recognise and certify
educational achievement and experience at all levels.

Jenny Gibbs, President of BIID comments, “We believe that this collaboration
is an extremely positive step forward for both organisations and that the
provision of a carefully structured Professional Pathway will be of great
benefit to the interior design industry as a whole”. Managing Director and
Chairman of the IDA, Colin Watson added, “I am delighted we are working with
BIID on this as both organizations represent the full spectrum of interior
design. It also provides a clear set of guidelines for those commissioning

Summer Party and Awards 2010

Last night’s inaugural British Institute of Interior Design Summer Party
and Awards was a rousing success. A fabulously dressed crowd arrived at
the world famous Saatchi Gallery on a beautiful sunny evening ready to
celebrate the launch of the Institute. Against the backdrop of artwork
from the brand new exhibition Newspeak: British Art Now, guests from
across the interior design world sipped Champagne and Tom Collins
cocktails whilst nibbling on a delicious selection of canapés.

A live jazz band kept the party jumping, pausing only for the Awards
section of the evening. Jenny Gibbs, President of the BIID, welcomed everyone to the event thanking our
sponsors, Molteni & C and Yewcoat and everyone who helped organise the party. She then handed
over to Kate Burnett, Editor of idFX magazine, who presented the
2009-2010 Continued Professional Development (CPD) Award to Ann Louise
Little who had accrued an extremely impressive 109 CPD points.

Iconic actor Alan Rickman then took to the stage to present the
prestigious Merit Award to worthy winner Mary Fox Linton. In addition
to praising Mary’s lengthy and varied career, he revealed to the
audience that The Grove Hotel in Hertfordshire, designed by Fox Linton, is
well known amongst the Harry Potter cast and crew for its ‘nice rooms
and naughty corridors’. Mary graciously accepted the award and gave a
wonderful speech, thanking all those who have contributed to her career
as well as the Institute for recognising her.

The event wouldn’t have been possible without the generosity of our
wonderful sponsors, Molteni & C and Yewcoat.

Additional thanks go to the companies who provided items for our gift bags - Elle Decoration, Brooke Green at Eliska, Bottle Green and Wood and Beyond

Keeping each other sweet at Edinburgh's newly opened Hotel Missoni

British Institute of Interior Design President, Iris Dunbar welcomed both
members and guests to an exuberant event at the newly opened Hotel Missoni in Edinburgh at the end of
October.
Membership Director, Janet Jones kicked off the day by speaking about the future impact of the BIDA's transformation to the British Institute of Interior Design (BIID)* and the importance of belonging to the leading professional body representing the interior design industry. BIID members form a collective of expert interior designers committed to the highest standards of professional practice and the BIID is now stronger than ever, furthering the impact and influence of the industry.
In a seminar entitled 'Keeping each other Sweet' Corporate Director, Neil Stevenson spoke about the interface between Corporate members and practicing Interior Designers. He stressed that in light of the current recession there is a need for suppliers and interior designers to work in tandem.
The day concluded with 'Time is Money' a Professional Practice Seminar which examined recognition and remuneration within interior design. The seminar was chaired by Kate Ainslie Williams, a BIID Member and former president, UK Chapter IIDA, along with a panel of interior designers including Mary Leslie and Ian Smith. It provided a lively opportunity for members to debate the challenges they face in creating fee structures which genuinely reflect their
true worth as professional designers.

British Institute of Interior Design to the Mayor of London in response to the draft London Housing Design Guide

The British Institute of
Interior Design welcomes the draft of the London Housing Design Guide, released
for consultation in July by the Mayor of London.

The London Housing Design
Guide is a very positive move by the Mayor in supporting design quality and
flags up the importance of good design and the urgent need to set minimum
standards for housing in London.

The BIID welcomes the
inclusion of minimum space standards which have been allowed to drop over
recent years. Homes that meet the real
needs of individuals and families are essential for the well being of everyone,
and well planned interior layouts which allow for good circulation and adequate
storage are essential to the well being of those living in London in close proximity, especially for
families with small children.

Too often new homes are
designed without drawing minimum furniture requirements to scale on plans,
which would influence the positions of partition walls, door swings, window
treatments and highlight the lack of storage. Show flats are often furnished with scaled down furniture to further
disguise the lack of space.

The BIID applauds the
Mayor's idea of extending space standards to all new housing and hopes that the
standards will also apply to preventing sound transmission through greater
insulation of all walls, an important element in providing comfortable places
for living in the capital.

We would welcome the opportunity
to advise and assist with standard furniture layouts and internal space
requirements, and would welcome the Government adopting such standards
throughout the country.

Interior Designers on a Higher Plane

Interior Designers on a Higher Plane

The Minister of State has granted the British Interior Design Association (BIDA) the
prestigious and rare accolade of being granted the right to incorporate 'Institute' into its name. On 1st June 2009 members from
across the UK met in the
Association's London
headquarters and voted unanimously to become the British Institute of
Interior Design (BIID).

Companies House grants the use of
the word Institute only to''professional bodies of the highest
standing'' who have demonstrated pre-eminence in their field.
According to BIID President Iris Dunbar ''The British Institute of
Interior Design exists to represent the Interior Design profession as a voice
of the industry to client, government and educational bodies.''

Already setting precedents with its
joint publication the RIBA/BIDA Form of Appointment, ID/05 has become the
standard contract for interior designers as recognized by courts and lawyers
throughout the United Kingdom. The Institute is also a recent member of the Construction Industry Council
(CIC), the umbrella body for professional institutes working in the built
environment, such as RIBA, RICS, and ICE, granting it an equal voice at the
highest levels of influence and with direct access to government
consultations.
These developments further the BIID's mission and strengthen the validation of its members to the general public.

The British Interior Design Association has been elected as a full member of the Construction Industry Council (CIC)

British Interior Design Association is proud to announce that they have been elected as a full member of the Construction Industry Council (CIC). The CIC is the representative forum for the industry's professional bodies, research organisations and specialist trade associations. Its members represent over 500,000 professionals working for, and in association with, the construction industry.

The breadth and depth of its membership means that CIC is the only single body able to speak with authority on the diverse issues connected with construction without being constrained by the self-interest of any particular sector. This puts us squarely amongst all the big players in the industry and allows our voice to be heard at the highest level.

The BIDA now have a place at a very influential table to champion the value of good design alongside chartered bodies and institutions such as the Royal Institute of British Architects, Institution of Civil Engineers and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, amongst many others. The BIDA now is the sole representative of the interior design profession to the construction industry.

BIDA Member and Associate commended in British Homes Awards 2008

Two members of the British Interior Design Association are celebrating being highly commended in the prestigious British Homes Awards. Interior designer Annie Stevens of Annie Stevens Design and Helen Mudie of One Eco Home entered their individual projects into the new category of Interior Design of the Year and were both applauded for their innovative use of materials and design. The awards, supported by the BIDA, offer an unrivalled opportunity for practices to showcase their design vision for tomorrow's lifestyle home and are judged by an esteemed panel including Past President of RIBA, Michael Manser and BIDA Chairman Lori Pinkerton-Rolet.

BIDA Member Annie Stevens transformed a 1930s semi-detached house into a beautiful family home and environment suitable to run a business. The interior reflects the owners and has been designed to be edited to accommodate growing children, new moods and the general flux of life. Annie added an extension for the general living area and used Paul Smith stripes, pillar box red leather furnishings and stainless steel work surfaces to create a truly individual space.

One Eco Home, a specialist eco interiors design consultancy that creates desirable furnishings with high sustainability standards, was also commended for its contribution to an eco show home for an apartment block in Brent. BIDA Associate Helen Mudie extensively researched and sourced a variety of ethical materials and products for this impressive project. All suppliers were asked to take part in Helen’s unique and rigorous sustainability assessment system, ensuring all of the products lived up to their eco promises. From a dining table made from recycled office desks and finished in non-toxic wax to sourcing special soapstone and jute products from a fair trade co-operative in Kenya, the level of detail was paramount throughout. The result was an ultra stylish and contemporary creation, which the judges believed would help contribute to sales interest in the building project as a whole.

Style needn't cost the earth with a professional interior designer

Interior designers have often been misconstrued as an expensive luxury and far beyond typical budgets. However, this is not the case. Using an interior designer can actually save money, especially if they are a member of the British Interior Design Association (BIDA). Interior designers must have a minimum of six years experience in full time employment in the field of interior design to be considered for BIDA membership and entry is via application and interview.

By hiring a BIDA member, clients will not only reap the rewards of superior expertise and design knowledge but also enjoy the benefits of an established network of trade and stockist contacts. A professional BIDA member will also be able to prevent costly mistakes by producing designs that are right first time, as well as manage the costs of the project and obtain the best results for the budget.

BIDA members have access to a list of approved quality suppliers from where they can source innovative new pieces or materials. Their network of specialist suppliers also
ensures that less available, more exclusive quality furnishings and interiors can be available to their clients at affordable prices.

Brian Lawrence, BIDA member, comments: “Good interior designers will have a vast knowledge of specialist suppliers unknown to the high street where both better quality and better priced items can be individually sourced and supplied to clients.”

A professional, quality finish by a professional interior designer can raise the value of a property substantially. The enhancement of a property can often make a considerable difference to its value, and can dramatically improve the chances of a speedy and successful sale or lease, for both private and commercial properties.

The BIDA promotes high standards throughout the interior design profession, encouraging and fostering proven design ability. The BIDA website is widely used as a search engine and database
tool to find interior designers of the highest calibre.

Industry Gathers to Consider Olympic Implications

Over 100 delegates representing all aspects of the contract furnishing industry across the UK gathered in London on 3 March to consider the implications and business opportunities presented by the coming London 2012 Olympics

Held at the imposing BERR Conference Centre on London’s Victoria Street, the seminar was hosted by the British Contract Furnishing & Design Association (BCFA) in partnership with Business Link Kent, and carried endorsement by the BFC, FIRA, OFAS, BIDA and ACID.

In addition to providing practical advice on the exacting requirements and timescales involved in qualifying to tender, the seminar also addressed key issues like innovation, design and the post-2012 legacy. ‘I realise that 2012 seems like a lifetime away,’ explained BCFA Managing Director Colin Watson, who chaired the seminar. ‘But, in a design-led sector such as ours, we must continue to adopt the long-term view. It is essential that we encourage our members - and indeed the industry at large - to maximise business opportunities during the run-up to the London Games.’

Opening the formal presentations was Mary Nicholls, Nations and Regions Coordinator with the London Development Agency, who gave an overview of the general principal of the Games and the need to leave a lasting legacy and a positive sporting ethos. Derek Wilson, Head of Design & Overlay with the London Organising Committee for the Olympic & Paralympic Games (LOCOG), then spoke on the Olympic heritage, giving delegates a preview of some preliminary plans whilst stressing the importance of this unique opportunity to demonstrate British design creativity and innovation to the rest of the world.

Next to the platform was David McKay, Head of Procurement with Bovis Lend Lease, who talked about the huge scale of the project, particularly in terms of the materials required. David also highlighted the post-2012 legacy of the building work, giving delegates an insight into the plan to convert the Olympic Village into real homes with a school, health centre, hotel and shopping centre. Finally came Kevin Ma, Marketing & Business Engagement Manager with the London Business Network, who took delegates through the CompeteFor web site. His valuable explanation showed how the site works for suppliers and buyers alike and emphasised the need for early registration in order to access the stream of updates on bidding opportunities.

After a lively panel discussion, the BCFA’s Colin Watson closed the seminar by reiterating the scale of the task ahead for those organising and delivering the Games. ‘They are part of a huge team opening up an opportunity which really will come only once in a lifetime,’ he stressed. ‘And they need the support of our industry - our creativity, our experience and our ability to deliver. London 2012 is a world showcase and one in which everyone can participate.’

The BCFA has now opened a helpdesk to answer queries relating to 2012 preparations.

What's Hot? BIDA predicts up and coming trends for 2008

As 2007 draws to a close, the British Interior Design Association (BIDA) takes a moment look ahead to see what’s predicted for 2008.

After a year where grey has been the colour en vogue, 2008 is predicted to be filled with bolder brighter shades such as lime greens and aubergine. Big bold damask patterns will remain popular in monochrome and in colour for added drama.

The eco-storm of 2007 shows no signs of abiding; trends for sustainable products and carbon neutral installations will be strong themes in 2008. Watch out for more inventive and innovative use of recycled and reformed materials such as linoleum, concrete and bamboo often in the least expected places.

George Bond, Regional Director of the BIDA comments: “Create an eco-friendly living space by investing in recycled home furnishings which will have a minimal impact on the environment.”

Susan Llewellyn of Susan Llewellyn Associates agrees: “Ecologically friendly materials are continuing to be in great demand. The beauty in natural materials lies in their imperfections and the result is ideally suited to family homes.”

On the opposite end of the spectrum, comes the continued love of bling. Metallic and crystal will be strong themes, and it will no longer be considered extrovert to appear shiny, luxurious and new. Sophistication will be personified by an extravagant use of luxury materials, counteracted with charcoal grey and black to create balance.

From the bold, to the sumptuous decadence of the burlesque, the rise in the popularity of cabaret in 2007 has evoked a strong trend towards the draped effect and oversized furniture reminiscent of the twenties. Fabrics and upholstery are luxurious depicting the opulence of the time.

“There will be a feeling of the twenties in 2008, with fashion cabaret and burlesque styles being reflected in interior design,” states Susan Llewellyn. “I also predict that 2008 promises to be a very exciting year; one which I feel will interior design will be able to push the creative boundaries.”

The BIDA promotes high standards throughout the interior design profession, encouraging and fostering proven design ability. The BIDA website is widely used as a search engine and database tool to find the interior designers of the highest calibre.

Christopher Dezille of Honky Design receives IFI Design Excellence Award 2007

BIDA member Christopher Dezille will be presented with the IFI Design Excellence award for Residential Interiors at the BIDA AGM on 30th October. Earlier this month Dean Keyworth (Chairman) and Simon Cavelle (BIDA member) of the BIDA collected the award on behalf of Honky Design at the IFI Design Congress on 10th October in Buscan, Korea.

The Design Excellence Awards were established for the first time this year. Entries for the awards have been subject to competition and award guidelines set by IFI and KOSID, in consultation with the IFI Board. Future awards will be presented biannually at the IFI General Assembly.

Awards have been drawn from the entries submitted for the IFI Year Book 2007 which are finalists from their respective national organisations. Winners have been selected from 60 entries which were divided into six categories. The IFI awards aim to promote Interior Architects/ Designers, and acknowledge the contribution they are making in setting the highest global standards for the profession.

Commenting on the awards, BIDA Chairman Dean Keyworth remarks “"We are delighted that BIDA designer members received no less than 4 nominations in IFI's inaugural Design Excellence Awards and that Christopher Dezille of Honky Designs took the prize for the residential category. With competition from top designers in 5 continents, this is a truly remarkable achievement”.

We have found a growing international interest in British interior design and through our membership of IFI, we have an excellent platform to promote our members' work abroad and to be involved in shaping the industry globally.

The IFI represents over 52,000 practising professional interior designers around the world and BIDA is proud to have been accepted as a full member of this prestigious organisation at its General Assembly in South Korea”

Christopher Dezille has worked in interior design for many years. In 2001 he set up his own design consultancy, Honky, which has undertaken both private and commercial projects, where he inspires creativity, professional expertise, ultimate perfection and subtle refinement to each of his interiors.

Christopher Dezille comments “when the BIDA called for entries to the IFI Awards I was unsure whether to submit an entry given their global status and far reaching influence. On hearing of our success as winners of the residential Interior category, I was initially overwhelmed by the enormity of being recognised in this way. I feel honoured that our work has hit a resonance with an international judging panel of this stature!”

Dean Keyworth is keen to continue the hard work of now Past Chairman, Diana Yakeley. At the AGM he commented that “Diana’s professionalism and attention to detail has, I believe brought increased respect to the BIDA and has been instrumental in attracting a wider selection of designers to become members”. Diana’s aim as Chairman was to develop the professionalism both of the industry and the Association; her involvement with the creation of the Form of Appointment for Interior Design Services (ID/05) published with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and the concentration on professional practice in lectures and seminars throughout 2006 are testament to this.

Dean’s aim as Chairman is to build on the solid foundation left by Diana and to expand the BIDA’s membership both in the UK and abroad. His main focus will be very much on increasing member numbers. He is however keen to reassure “that this does not mean a reduction in standards or entry requirements…. Being stringent in our admissions procedure does not mean we have to appear unapproachable, I am keen to attract a wider variety of designers and suppliers to the Association”. He also intends to gain further recognition and possibly funding from the UK government in order to develop a more powerful voice for the interior design industry.

During the AGM, several Board members highlighted their plans for Continued Professional Development (CPD) seminars and events in 2007. Following the overwhelming success of the BIDA International Breakfast “Avoid Getting “Lost in Translation”-How to Design Abroad” the opening event of Decorex in September, International Director, Lori Pinkerton-Rolet announced her committees intention to repeat this again in 2007 possibly focusing on European interior design. Education Director, Iris Dunbar responsible for this years full day Professional Development Seminar day which included lectures from leading manufactures, lawyers, contractors and insurers announced her intention to repeat this format in 2007 looking at the issue of fees and charging. In addition the Regional Committee will continue to organise events and lectures around the country to encourage learning and networking in the regions.

With regard to membership, in response to the BIDA’s presence at Decorex and 100% Design the BIDA had over 300 enquiries expressing interest in membership. Membership Director, Karin Verzariu is organising a networking event for potential new members of all categories in the Spring. She also intends to continue the highly successful Student & Associate Evenings which have proved to be an encouragement to those due to upgrade their membership.

The strength of the BIDA brand, both within the industry and among the general public continues to grow. This increased recognition has brought record numbers of visitors to the BIDA website and an unprecedented level of press and TV enquires interested in both the BIDA and its members. For 2007, the intention is to continue participating at relevant exhibitions, to further develop the BIDA website and continue to strengthen links with other influential trade associations, such as the RIBA, IFI and CEDIA.

The revived BIDA Foundation is actively seeking artist/craftsmen who need financial assistance with their studies. In 2007 they will be launching their website, an expanded student competition and at least three events raising money for the next generation of crafts people and designers.

“On behalf of the BIDA, we would like to say a special thank you to outgoing board members: Ann Louise Little, Annie Stevens, Caro Hill and Ian Thompson for their contributions, unrelenting commitment and support over the last few years. They will be greatly missed” added Dean Keyworth.

The BIDA AGM took place on Wednesday15th November in The Chambers, Chelsea Harbour, London.

BIDA Awards at Pulse by Top Drawer

Following the very positive response to the British Interior Design Association (BIDA) awards at Pulse in 2005 the BIDA has once again this year presented a Winner and Highly Commended Award for Best Dressed Stand.

The judging panel was made up of BIDA Members: Karin Verzariu of Key Interiors, René Dekker of SHH and Sue Timney of Sue Timney Ltd. Anyone visiting Pulse this year would agree that the task of judging could not have been an easy one, with many visitors commenting on the great range of cutting-edge products and developing trends that they had seen at the show.

The 2006 ‘Winner of the Award for the Best Dressed Stand’ was presented to Dolce Villa Decoration. The BIDA judges selected the Dolce Villa Decoration stand as the recipient of this award for the outstanding manner in which ‘they displayed their beautiful products in clearly defined groups using colour and style. They made excellent use of all three dimensions of their stand, in particular of the height available, making their display visible from a distance. The design was elegant, creatively arranged and beautifully lit’.

Dolce Villa Decoration was founded in 1996, specialising in selling and manufacturing unique hand made and mouth-blown glass from all over Europe. Their collection is made up of beautiful colours in many different finishes including clear solid colours, opaline colours, antique, sand blasted and acid matt finishing. Dolce Villa Decoration strives to offer a collection that is beautiful as well as commercial. All pieces are hand made by skilled makers trained for many years in the intricate art of glassmaking. While the collections develop over time, best-sellers remain in production for as long as possible.

The 2006 ‘Highly Commended Award for the Best Dressed Stand’ was presented to Bluebell 33. Their collections include 100% natural wax scented gift candles, fashionable gift-wrap and greeting cards. The BIDA judges loved the way ‘they used dynamic colour to great effect. Many types of products were displayed and although there was an abundance of pattern and colour, co-ordination ensured that the stand appeared uncluttered and that their merchandise stood out from the crowd.

The BIDA will be presenting an award for Best Stand Design and 15 Swing Tags for Products of Outstanding Quality and Design Innovation at Decorex International, 24th-27th September 2006.

BIDA Website usage up by 225%

Following the successful re-launch of the British Interior Design Association website www.bida.org in January 2005, we are delighted to announce a stunning 225% increase in hits from 2.4 million in 2002* to 7.3 million in 2005. This represents over 111,000 visitors to the site per year.

Many BIDA designer members have reported a dramatic increase in leads coming via the new website, with several reporting that over half their new business is gained from clients searching www.bida.org. Julie Kent, a Member based in Bath informed the BIDA that, “Following the launch of the BIDA web site, I have had numerous enquires leading to projects both locally and nationally. Through these leads and referrals, I would say over 75% of our turnover has been thanks to the BIDA web site."

The new site was designed to make it easier and quicker for the public to find qualified, professional interior designers and also to provide BIDA members with a comprehensive resource of top quality industry suppliers as well as details on the latest BIDA events, services and benefits.

The redesigned website has an improved and more comprehensive search facility, enabling visitors to the site to search for designers and suppliers by name, practice experience, region or specialist area. All designers listed on the website are required to carry the relevant insurances necessary for running a professional practice.

In the near future the BIDA hopes to add a search facility for its International Members. This will cater for the large number of international enquiries received as nearly one quarter of the traffic to the website originates from the USA, Australia, Saudi Arabia, France and the Netherlands.

*our last recorded figures for the old website

BIDA Awards at Design Interiors, Birmingham

Following the very positive response to the British Interior Design Association (BIDA) awards presented at Design Interiors in 2005 the BIDA has once again this year presented an ‘Award for Best Open Space’ and eleven swing tags for ‘Products of Outstanding Quality & Design Innovation’.

The judging panel was made up of BIDA Members: Lori Pinkerton-Rolet of Park Grove Design, Annie Stevens of Annie Stevens Designs Ltd and Verity Spencer of Verity Spencer Interior Design. Anyone visiting Design Interiors this year would agree that the task of judging could not have been an easy one. "It was refreshing that many of the recipients of our BIDA Products of Outstanding Quality and Design Innovation awards were using original and innovative combinations of materials in their new designs" Verity Spencer. Lori Pinkerton-Rolet, remarked "The winners were really outstanding, which is no mean feat given the very high standard of this show. I have no doubt people will already be earmarking their calendars for next year's event".

The 2006 ‘Award for Best Open Space’ was presented to Natasha Marshall Fabrics & Wallcoverings. Natasha Marshall graduated from Glasgow School Of Art in 1996 with a BA Honours degree in Printed and Knitted Textiles. She started Squigee in 1997 with a loan from the Princess Scottish Youth Business Trust and a bursary from The Scottish Arts Council.

From the outset she wanted Squigee to design and manufacture screen-printed fabrics in simple geometric design styles which would increase the use of pattern in its simplest form, specially for the retail and contract markets. Natasha’s designs have a very strong handwriting: they are contemporary design classics rather than fashion statements. “Instant fashion can be disaster for interiors” says Natasha “You have to have something which is modern but won’t look dated in five year’s time”. Her fabrics are “liveable with” but modern – modern alone can be too hard. She sets out to please both architects, who want very plain fabrics to complement their space and interior designers, who want something a little softer but still contemporary.

BIDA Award Honorary Fellowships

Ref: BIDAHon Fellowship2005

The British Interior Design Association is this year celebrating its 40th anniversary. Originally set up in 1965 as the Interior Designers’ and Decorators’ Association (IDDA) it merged in 2003 with the UK chapter of the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) to become Britain’s only association dedicated to the representation of professional interior designers: The British Interior Design Association. To mark this milestone the first Honorary Fellowships of the BIDA were awarded to David Mlinaric, Sylvia Odam-Mitchell, Vernon Mark and Tim Hammond.

Tim started the Association as a way of recognising interior decoration, as it was then described, and of encouraging excellence in those who were joining the industry at a time where there was very little formal training as such. Hammonds was a wonderful training ground for young designers where traditional skills of a very high standard were learned, and many of our members benefited from serving their time there before going on to set up their own companies. Tim served as Chairman of IDDA for five years.

David Mlinaric is one of our most illustrious designers, having worked on some of the best known historical buildings and on some of the great British Institutions. The V&A, The National Portrait Gallery, Spencer House, Lord Rothschild’s homes, Aspreys, the National Trust are just some of his clients who have appreciated his meticulous approach to historical detail and colour sense. A delicious psychedelic corduroy suit made for him by Mr Fish in the 1960’s, and an exquisite pair of green lizard skin shoes held in V&A’s costume collection give an insight into a truly creative, humorous and original man whom we are very proud to have as a member.

Sylvia Odam-Mitchell was trained as an architect and interior designer and who with her husband John Odam, taught the diploma course at the Inchbald School of Design in the 1970’s. Many a BIDA member can thank Sylvia for drumming the need for good professional practice and attention to detail into them. She has been a tireless supporter of our Association and responsible for setting up the requirement for Continuing Professional Development, CPD in the association.

Vernon Mark fled Nazi Germany as a child and came to England to join his brother. He found work with Hammonds at a time when young Germans were viewed with some suspicion in most places and certainly in one of the grandest of all decorating establishments. It says much about both Hammonds and Vernon that the relationship lasted for years, and Vernon’s influence in editing some of the great fabric designs continues today. He became a director of Decorex, and an advisor to the Museum of Domestic Design and Architecture.

Something old, something new...

The British Interior Design Association (BIDA) is celebrating a double success this month. This summer saw the creation of the 10th BIDA show house at the Daily Telegraph House & Garden Fair at Olympia. This year’s show house took the theme of ‘Smart Space’ to highlight innovative design and the use of new materials and technology. For the first time, the BIDA show house included an interactive area where visitors could try out a range of interior products from lighting controls to home gym equipment. The room sets were designed by a broad range of BIDA designers from long–standing industry figure, George Bond, to associate members Emma Sims-Hilditch and Cara Louise Cunniff.

As well as having a very positive reception from the public, Smart Space proved extremely successful for those designers and suppliers who took part. Cara Louise Cunniff’s bathroom attracted dozens of leads, including an international project and corporate member Reed Harris Tiles reported that a large percentage of enquires on their own stand was generated from visitors seeing their product in the show house bathroom.

Susan Crewe, editor of House & Garden said, “As ever, the BIDA apartment was one of the most popular and inspiring elements of the Fair. The celebratory 'Smart Space' combined sophisticated interior design with integrated technology and enabled visitors to experience for themselves the fusion of these two elements”.

BIDA’s second celebration is for the instant success of the RIBA/BIDA Form of Appointment for Interior Design Services (ID/05). In today’s increasingly litigious environment, this model contract covers all aspects of an interior designer’s services for a client and has been flying off the RIBA bookshelves. Discussions are already underway for future joint RIBA/BIDA publications.

Launch of the BIDA Christmas Card Competition

The British Interior Design Association – BIDA – promotes professionalism within the interior design industry.

This year, the BIDA is delighted to announce its support of the Druk White Lotus School project in Ladakh. The school aims to provide a modern education for Ladakhi children – an education grounded in their own culture, which can prepare them to lead happy and productive lives.

The school is an on-going project, designed by project engineers and architects, Arup Associates and Ove Arup and Partners, and has been internationally recognised as ‘an exceptional project’. At the World Architecture Awards 2002, the school was awarded the following: Best green building in the world; Best educational building in the world; Asian building of the year.

The BIDA are delighted to be able to support the Druk White Lotus School and are therefore launching a Christmas Card design competition within the design industry, across all ages.

We are actively encouraging those associated with design and education to submit entries for a Christmas Card Design, which will be judged at Decorex 2005. Ian Thompson Associates, the organisers of Decorex, are delighted to be able to support this competition in conjunction with the BIDA.

An entry fee of £10.00 will be payable, accompanied by the completed artwork, and entry Form. All entries will be on display at Decorex International 25th –28th September at The Royal Hospital, Chelsea, London SW3.

All Christmas Card design entries will be for sale to visitors at Decorex and will include a number of designs by well-known faces within the design industry and also by famous celebrities. The winning design will be chosen as the official BIDA Christmas Card for 2005, with all profit from this competition going to support the latest development phase of the Druk White Lotus School.

Designing Tomorrow's Homes...Today

A full day’s seminar at the Conrad Hilton Hotel, Chelsea Harbour, London on 23rd May 2005 from 9.00am-5.00pm The BIDA, in association with RIBA and CEDIA are pleased to launch a daylong seminar aimed at the interior design and architectural practices operating in the high-end residential market. The day has been designed to instil both confidence and knowledge in design professionals to enable them to represent the best interests of their clients throughout a project without leaving the technology specification to chance.
It is also intended to ensure that properties are being designed from the very start with an eye to the future capabilities of home technology, whether or not the current specification calls for it. Too often design professionals find themselves at a disadvantage when called to brief electrical contractors on wiring requirements or co-ordinating the variety of manufacturers required to put specification together. Too often, an architect or designer may step back from the responsibilities involved and the client and main contractor can be left to pick up the pieces.
The day will be opened by Angela Brady, Partner of the well-established architectural practice, Brady Mallalieu Architects, and will be followed by a series of course modules throughout the day, covering everything you need to know about smart technology in enough detail to present to you clients and to keep control of project specification. The course is the first of a series of events designed in partnership between RIBA ( Royal Institute of British Architects) and the BIDA. It also extends the links between BIDA and CEDIA (Custom Electronic Design & Installation Association) prior to CEDIA’s Expo in June and Decorex in September this year.
Chris Westhead of Gordon Lindsey Designs will speak on the need for good project management; Adam Jolliffe of Accurro will demonstrate the latest communications using remote access, broadband and 3G technology. Mike Entwhistle of I-Life Solutions will take us through the minefield of specifying screen technology. There will also be modules on network cabling, lighting controls & design, fire alarms & HVAC.
If technology is present in one room, why not in others? Is it a matter of budget or confidence. The client’s interests can only be best served when he/she is fully briefed on current and future technology advances. It is more than ‘toys for boys’ but an opportunity to build and design energy efficient homes that won’t require total re-wiring as technology becomes more available to all.
The motivation from a client to employ either architect or interior designer will be to ensure that they receive a design that couldn’t be bought on the ‘high street’. With the growth of ‘home cinemas’ everyone is an armchair expert. This seminar will keep the design professions a step ahead of their market.
The day is sponsored by Leax Lighting Controls; I-Life Solutions; AMX Ltd; Technogym and CEDIA.
Tickets cost £130 (plus vat) and are still available, Please contact the BIDA office on 020 7349 0800 or enquiries@bida.org to obtain a booking form.

Best of British Interior Design at the Daily Telegraph House & Garden Fair 2005, Olympia 30th June - 3rd July 2005

2005 is the 10th Anniversary of the Daily Telegraph House and Garden Fair and is also the 10th year in which the British Interior Design Association (BIDA) has been invited to design a showhouse as one of the key visitor attractions.
The theme for this year’s showhouse is ‘Smart Space’. Smart Space is a step away from the traditional BIDA showhouse, as it will focus on educating visitors about the process of interior design. Smart Space will also include an interactive area - ‘Explore & Inspire’ - in addition to its more conventional room sets. This area is designed to encourage visitors to find out more about the BIDA and its members, to explore the process of working with a designer and to experience first-hand the products and services offered by the BIDA’s corporate members. For the third consecutive year, our project managers Tina Mcfarlane, Sally Dernie and Brenda Gibson have managed to bring together six expert interior designers to each create a unique room set. Within each room our designers will showcase ‘Smart design’, incorporating the intelligent and stylish use of new products and sustainable materials, the latest in cutting edge home technology and an innovative use of existing products or materials.
With the increasing adoption of home technology over the past few years, the boundaries have become blurred between the defined spaces in which we live, eat, sleep and work and living spaces within the home are increasingly becoming multi-functional. To reflect this rising trend of ambiguity as to room function, the individual spaces have been identified by the activities that they are used for, to focus the mind on practicality and function. This is an exciting move away from the concept of the traditional home and one which we hope will inspire and educate visitors about the infinite uses of space within their homes.
The room sets include:
Meet and Greet: designed by Brenda Gibson of Complete Interior Co. Ltd and Sally Dernie of Sally Dernie Ltd. Brenda and Sally will create an eye-catching, inviting reception area. Modern materials - chrome, perspex and PVC - are juxtaposed with organic influences - a rose bower of paper and wire mesh (no green fingers required) and a fantasy of soothing pools of languid, calming waters.
Relax and Recline: designed by George Bond at Omega Designer Workshop Ltd. This will be George’s second House & Garden Fair, last year creating a town garden. This year George will be creating a living area, combining an eclectic mix of styles with an overarching modern theme, using neutral tones, and a range of accessories with a twist!
Cook and Create: designed by George Khachfe at Poliform UK Ltd. George Khachfe was responsible for bringing Poliform, cutting edge Italian designed furniture into the UK. More recently, George has now introduced Poliform’s sister kitchen company to the UK and will be using pieces from the stunning Varenna collection to create a superb kitchen area in the BIDA Smart Space. Varenna kitchens are notoriously innovative and functional whilst remaining at the cutting edge of style.
Eat & Entertain:
designed by Kitty-Lynne Edwards-Jones of Kitty-Lynne Jones Interior Design. Kitty specialises in contemporary classical style, creating elegant and timeless interiors, with imaginative use of space and colour. Kitty’s design for the dining area aims to inspire and tease the imagination, disguising intrigue and surprise within a conventional, soothing backdrop. A twist of humour, a quirk, a conversation piece……all food for thought.
Surf and Play:
designed by Dean Keyworth of Armstrong Keyworth Ltd. Dean has created everything from antique-filled traditional dining rooms to hi-tech media dens with discreetly and stylishly concealed technology. Dean will create a dual-purpose area – acting both as a home office and a relaxing media room, balancing the masculine American walnut bespoke furniture with colourful, floral wallcovering. Sliding lacquer panels will assure Feng Shui harmony by hiding the state of the art equipment when not in use.
Sleep and Seduce:
designed by Emma Sims-Hilditch of Emma Sims-Hilditch Interiors. Emma’s sympathetic use of colour, light and texture - hallmarks of her work - are nowhere more clearly displayed than in the bedroom she has designed for the BIDA Smart Space. Incorporating femininity and sophistication, the gentle colour palette Emma has chosen offers a restful environment within which to sleep, work and relax.

Preen and Pamper: designed by Cara Louise Cunniff of Devereaux Designers Ltd. Bringing together classical with contemporary, beauty with practicality and fusing the best of British with international influences, Cara’s design for the bathroom this year explores the creative use of textures and materials to add a unique dimension to this sculptured bathroom. This is a place to relax, luxuriate, preen and pamper.

Launch of the New BIDA/RIBA Client Contract

On 1st June 2005 the British Interior Design Association (BIDA) will launch their new client contract, ‘ID/05’, a form of Client agreement for interior design services. It will be jointly published by the RIBA and BIDA . Following RIBA President George Ferguson’s suggestion that those who work in the built environment should collaborate more closely, a BIDA working party was set up by Vice Chairman Diana Yakeley which included interior designer Kate Ainslie-Williams, Chris Westhead, adjudicator and partner in Gordon Lindsay Design and Stephen Yakeley, RIBA member to draft the document. The agreement which has taken many months of hard work and covers the many different ways in which interior designers may work. As with the existing forms, ID/05 will clarify for the client the scope of services to be performed whilst affording the designer protections against bad debts. It should prove invaluable to both architects and designers when carrying out interior design work of any description.

The working party was advised by leading construction solicitor, Tony Blackler of MacFarlanes, and by Roland Phillips of the RIBA, both of whom have a long history of advising on the RIBA’s client contracts. The BIDA welcome this groundbreaking co-operation with the RIBA and will be holding a one day seminar to launch the agreement in the Lutyens Room at RIBA on the publication date, June 1st. The event will cover issues affected by the new contract including professsional indemnity, adjudication, and the effects of recent legislation and case law.
