Opportunities in China

Adrienne Chinn attended the recent UKTI China Revealed Event where speakers included representatives of the UK and Chinese Governments. She reports that there are considerable opportunities for foreign business in China and this is welcomed by the Chinese Government which has made the decision to open the country to foreign investment.
Modern architecture is much in demand and the Chinese see the UK as a world leader in design. The Chinese can be excellent clients encouraging designers to push the boundaries of design and there is also a potential international and ex-pat market based in the country as well.
The right approach and understanding cultural differences are vital to success, and it is essential to find a local partner, develop relationships and networks and establish a track record in the country. Expert advice can make all the difference and the London Development Agency and the UKTI are supporting British business development in China. The UKTI is putting together some specific trade missions next spring and it is to be hoped that these will include a design-related mission. Adrienne’s view is that this would provide an opportunity not to be missed.
