Launch of the New BIDA/RIBA Client Contract

Published on:09/05/2005

On 1st June 2005 the British Interior Design Association (BIDA) will launch their new client contract, ‘ID/05’, a form of Client agreement for interior design services. It will be jointly published by the RIBA and BIDA . Following RIBA President George Ferguson’s suggestion that those who work in the built environment should collaborate more closely, a BIDA working party was set up by Vice Chairman Diana Yakeley which included interior designer Kate Ainslie-Williams, Chris Westhead, adjudicator and partner in Gordon Lindsay Design and Stephen Yakeley, RIBA member to draft the document. The agreement which has taken many months of hard work and covers the many different ways in which interior designers may work. As with the existing forms, ID/05 will clarify for the client the scope of services to be performed whilst affording the designer protections against bad debts. It should prove invaluable to both architects and designers when carrying out interior design work of any description.

The working party was advised by leading construction solicitor, Tony Blackler of MacFarlanes, and by Roland Phillips of the RIBA, both of whom have a long history of advising on the RIBA’s client contracts. The BIDA welcome this groundbreaking co-operation with the RIBA and will be holding a one day seminar to launch the agreement in the Lutyens Room at RIBA on the publication date, June 1st. The event will cover issues affected by the new contract including professsional indemnity, adjudication, and the effects of recent legislation and case law. A limited number of seminar places at £75 per person are still available from the BIDA, 020 7349 0800.
