Hazel McCormack Young LLP, home to BIID member Neil Trett, have been shortlisted in the Community Benefit category for the South East in the 2011 RICS Awards. The Bridge Dartford is Kent County Council's first purpose-built lifelong learning and community campus bringing together various KCC services and agencies under one roof. The brief required a building to act as a focus for the new development at The Bridge site.
The building includes a two form entry primary school for up to 420 children, a 26-place Early Years Centre, a first floor youth centre specialising in music and the arts, adult education facilities, library access point, a community meeting room, police point, Adult and Children Social Services, a health consulting room and central reception. As the school is new, it has been phased to allow the pupil numbers to grow organically and is currently based on a one form entry format.
The school and community facilities are designed to raise aspirations about learning and will be a focus for community learning within the new ‘Bridge' development. The building will provide a place for the community which blurs the boundaries between formal and informal learning and provide a strong link between home, school, the community, health and social services.
The building's environmental features include rainwater harvesting, natural ventilation and ETFE covered atria to the school and central ‘hub', designed to maximise daylight within the centre of the school. The building is designed to achieve a ‘Very Good' BREEAM rating.
