BIDA Foundation Student Prize 2006

Published on:21/11/2006

The BIDA Foundation is delighted to announce the winners of their Student Prize 2006. The Prize was open to students in their second to last year of a BA (Hons) course in Interior Design or Interior Architecture during the 2005/2006 Academic Year.

The winner of this year’s prize is Michael Witten of Middlesex University. He received £500, 1 year’s Student Membership of the BIDA and certificate for his intelligent, well presented and innovative design to transform a Victorian pump house into a music school.

The runner up is Rhiannon Thomas of the University of Glamorgan. She received a £100 book token, 1 year’s Student Membership of the BIDA and a certificate. Her proposed conversion of a redundant pub into a specialist bicycle store was creative, witty, and thorough.

The Trustees of the BIDA Foundation asked Course Directors to nominate one student with an outstanding ability to think creatively, and whose excellent technical and presentational skills are matched by an innovative and imaginative approach to his or her work. Students were asked to submit a project which they had undertaken during the year together with the brief and a short explanation of their approach to it.

The competition was judged by Mary Leslie, Chairman of Trustees and Gordon Lindsay, a Trustee since 1997. The prize was awarded by Mary Fox-Linton, Patron of the BIDA Foundation.

The BIDA Foundation hopes to run a student competition again in 2007. Details will be announced in the Spring.

Notes:
The BIDA Foundation is a charity founded in 1985 to promote and improve the art and practice of Interior Design for the benefit of the community at large. We recognise and encourage the importance of using old skills in new and innovative ways. Whilst our main activity is the granting of bursaries to students of the crafts upon which Interior designers depend such as carving, gilding, stained glass, textile conservation or furniture design, we also make awards to Interior Design Students. The BIDA Foundation receives no government funding and relies on private donations in order to create a maximum of three bursaries annually, along with the student awards. The Foundation is a registered charity and most donations are made through Gift Aid, thus enabling the foundation to recover substantial amounts of tax paid by donors.

The British Interior Design Association (BIDA is a membership association that exists to promote and support the interior design and decoration professions. The BIDA is committed to the advancement of the professional practice of interior design and to the creation of a comprehensive vision for the design challenges of the future. www.bida.org
