BIDA Awards at Design Interiors, Birmingham

Published on:03/02/2006

Following the very positive response to the British Interior Design Association (BIDA) awards presented at Design Interiors in 2005 the BIDA has once again this year presented an ‘Award for Best Open Space’ and eleven swing tags for ‘Products of Outstanding Quality & Design Innovation’.

The judging panel was made up of BIDA Members: Lori Pinkerton-Rolet of Park Grove Design, Annie Stevens of Annie Stevens Designs Ltd and Verity Spencer of Verity Spencer Interior Design. Anyone visiting Design Interiors this year would agree that the task of judging could not have been an easy one. "It was refreshing that many of the recipients of our BIDA Products of Outstanding Quality and Design Innovation awards were using original and innovative combinations of materials in their new designs" Verity Spencer. Lori Pinkerton-Rolet, remarked "The winners were really outstanding, which is no mean feat given the very high standard of this show. I have no doubt people will already be earmarking their calendars for next year's event".

The 2006 ‘Award for Best Open Space’ was presented to Natasha Marshall Fabrics & Wallcoverings. Natasha Marshall graduated from Glasgow School Of Art in 1996 with a BA Honours degree in Printed and Knitted Textiles. She started Squigee in 1997 with a loan from the Princess Scottish Youth Business Trust and a bursary from The Scottish Arts Council.

From the outset she wanted Squigee to design and manufacture screen-printed fabrics in simple geometric design styles which would increase the use of pattern in its simplest form, specially for the retail and contract markets. Natasha’s designs have a very strong handwriting: they are contemporary design classics rather than fashion statements. “Instant fashion can be disaster for interiors” says Natasha “You have to have something which is modern but won’t look dated in five year’s time”. Her fabrics are “liveable with” but modern – modern alone can be too hard. She sets out to please both architects, who want very plain fabrics to complement their space and interior designers, who want something a little softer but still contemporary.

The new Natasha Marshall retail brand, is built around Natasha’s classic simple contemporary surface design style and was launched at 100% Design 2004. After the success of the launch, a new licensing agreement has been signed with Today Interiors to distribute all Squigee fabrics and wallcoverings worldwide.

Natasha Marshall’s latest collections, Accolade & Kentra were launched at Design Interiors this year. Accolade is the first vinyl wallcovering collection from Natasha Marshall. With 6 designs and a total of 50 exciting options and colours. Accolade brings a fresh new contemporary design style and colour palette to the vinyl market. Kentra is a sumptuous collection of weaves with a tweed twist, interlinking pattern and textures in a classic chic palette. Kentra fabrics are inherently fire retardant and pass 40,000+ rubs making them ideal for all interior applications from curtains to upholstery and residential to severe contract.

On receiving the award Natasha Marshall said: “In light of the very high standard of the competition, it is a great honour to receive this award. Thanks to my team and all at Today Interiors for all their hard work.”
