Ian trained with Jimmy Thomson at A.F. Drysdale Ltd. He was made a director of A.F. Drysdale Ltd in 2000. He resigned from the company in 2003 to take up the position of Head of Design at Whytock & Reid. He resigned three months later to start up Ian Smith Design Ltd with his colleague Stuart Dawson. He now has a successful design practice based at the edge of Edinburgh's Georgian New Town.
