The British Institute of Interior Design is committed to encouraging and supporting creativity and competence in the field of interior design through facilitating best practice, practical professional support, development opportunities and education.

Student membership

The Institute offers membership to students at special rates as an introduction to the activities of the organisation and an opportunity for dialogue with members of the Institute and other industry professionals.

To become a student member of the BIID you must be enrolled on an accredited course. This should be either:

  1. An HND, FdA, BA, BSc, MA or MDes in Interior Design, Interior Architecture, 3D Design or Spatial Design offered by a university recognised by the UK government. For a list of interior design courses click here http://www.ucas.com/
  2. A Certificate, Diploma or BA in Interior Design, Interior Architecture, 3D Design or Spatial Design offered by an independent course provider that has been accredited by a recognised accrediting body.  An example of a recognised accrediting body might be the British Accreditation Council (BAC), the Open and Distance Learning Quality Council (ODLQC), City and Guilds or Edxcel. Some independent course providers also offer courses that are validated by UK universities. The course must include a minimum of 200 hours of study.
  3. A non-UK course offered by a nationally recognised and independently accredited university/school/institute in the country it is offered in

Upgrade to Associate

Following completion of a full-time degree, full-time one-year diploma course or level 5 equivalents, a student will be invited to apply for Associate membership and will be granted automatic entry on receipt of a completed application and satisfactory references.

Those who have obtained a professional certificate or a certificate from a professional home study course will be invited to continue with their student membership for a further year whilst gaining work experience before applying for Associate membership. Students may also continue at this level up to two years.

The application fee for Associate membership will be waived for student members upgrading within a month of their student membership expiring.
