Council

The British Institute of Interior Design is governed by a Council of Directors, democratically elected by and from its membership, who ensure that the activities of the Institute are in line with its stated mission.

Diana Yakeley – President

Diana is responsible for the strategic development of the Institute. Her key objectives are to work closely with Council, committees and other groups within the design community, nationally and internationally and continue the well respected work of the Institute as the leading industry body for professional interior designers. Diana has written books on design, as well as professional practice and contracts.

Sue Timney – President Elect/Education Director

Sue is responsible for building relationships between colleges and universities and the Institute, working on the development of the Professional Pathway and overseeing the Institute’s CPD activities. Sue runs a design practice, Sue Timney, and Timney Fowler a fabric company. She is a Visiting Professor at the Royal College of Art.

Jenny Gibbs – Past President

As Past President Jenny will continue to work on the strategic development of the Institute as well as providing the Council with experienced advice by liaising with the audit committee and Past President's club. Jenny is the founder and Principal of KLC School of design and author of four books on the history and practice of interior design.

Patti Money–Coutts – Operations and Finance Director

Patti's key aims are to continue strengthening existing management reporting and control procedures to enable Council and executive staff to plan and monitor costs and income on a timely basis.  She is also responsible for developing staff and office procedures, IT and premises in addition to helping to provide a sound basis for the current and planned growth of the Institute. Patti runs her own interior design practice based in Hampshire.

Brian Lawrence – Membership Director

Brian's aims are to continue the growth in the institute membership in all categories with the continuing support of its strong and experienced committee. He has been a designer member of the organisation for many years and runs his own fabric, wallpaper and custom design business.

Simon Hamilton – International Director

Simon's recent travels to Japan, France, Australia, USA and UAE, have been to promote the benefits of using creative and highly trained British Designers. By seeking new opportunities and potential collaborations with practices abroad, this will help UK based interior designers who wish to reach a global market. He is already busy organizing Trade Missions to the USA for this year with other destinations under consideration. With over 20 years in the industry, Simon runs his own interior design company serving commercial and high-end residential clients.

Christopher Vane Percy – Heritage and Environment Director

Christopher works to further the Institute's work in the fields of heritage and the environment. He is an established interior designer, Regional Chairman of the Historic Houses Association for East Anglia Region and is a committee member of the East of England Historic Environment Forum.

Neil Stevenson – Industry Partner Director

Neil's key aims are to enhance the professional standards of both designers and suppliers and by doing so increase the commercial activity between them with improved the project delivery performance. Neil is a furniture designer and maker with his own company supplying bespoke furniture and specialist joinery into premium projects.

Hayley Manning - Associate and Student Director

Hayley's key aims are to provide support, organise events and encourage networking for Student and Associate members of the Institute. Hayley runs her own interior design practice based in London.
